Re: Edward Beauclerk Maurice: Old Blue, circa 1924-30
Dear Montagu, I hope that I have your name correct. We were in correspondence last January about the above named. Did you get any further in your researches? I have a set of The Blue around his time at C.H. and may be able to supply further information about some of his contemporaries from that sour...

Re: Parking at C.H.
I have not used C.H.Station for many years but commuters were allowed free parking there at one time. This is not obviously the case now as there must be many people from outlying villages using the station as well as staff and visitors to the school who have to pay a daily charge. During World War ...

Parking at C.H.
Does anyone have any memories regarding parking regulations at C.H.? Prior to the growth of mass car ownership by the nineteen sixties I do not remember any restrictions in the Avenue where cars were permitted to drive all the way through. The Art School car park was constructed before WW2. Entrance...

"George" Seaman's "The Last Years in London" published in 1977 gives a great deal of information on the proposed move from London and also includes excellent Bibliography.

Re: CH Photo
The Preparatory School classroom block was constructed c 1937-38 and this does not appear in the photograph. The Art school car park was certainly there before the war. The absence of any parked cars suggests it must have been the early nineteen thirties following the opening of the New Science Scho...

Re: Shakespeare plays at CH
On 30th. October 1945 the whole school , with the exception of the Prep. who went by train, marched into Horsham to see the "Henry Vth Olivier film. Performances of the plays included "Hamlet" performed in Michaelmas term 1945 by the Geography Deps. in the Prep. Hall in modern dress. ...

Re: BOB FINCH ARTICLE IN CHURCH TIMES
The Measuring Worth .com website gives the purchasing power of £1 in 2014 as 349 times that in 1552 which comes to an equivalent salary of £5236.50 per annum for the Writing Master's salary of £15. One does not know what hidden emoluments were available at that time such as board and lodging compare...

Re: frieze in dayroom of infirmary
There was a rather sick joke made at the time of the Ardennes Offensive by the Germans in December 1944 that the Allies could not use Dunkirk this time round to evacuate their forces as it was still held by the Germans.

Re: frieze in dayroom of infirmary
Dearv John. I was interested in your note about the Channel Islands Occupation. Should like to see a copy of your book collection on the subject. I used to attend regularly the Tunbridge Wells Book fair held at King Charles's Church Hall and there was often a visitor who frequently asked for any boo...

Re: frieze in dayroom of infirmary
I know that we are getting somewhat off the original thread in talking about V 1 s in association with the Infirmary day room frieze but one anomaly regarding the extended German occupation of Europe has always puzzled me. Why was no attempt made to liberate the Channel Islands until V. E. Day when ...

It was the Masters' Garage (s) that were destroyed by the flying Bomb in 1944. A considerable number of windows were broken in the surrounding area one of the worst hit places was Maine B . Miraculously there were scarcely, if any, casualties, I seem to remember that we were not evacuated to the Tub...

There was a proposal made some years back that C H should be transferred back to the London area. it was certainly discussed at the highest level but considered impractical.

The letter referred to was from R.A.Finch BA 46-53 and appeared in The Daily Telegraph, not The Guardian. One wonders how much the CH site would be worth if sold on the open market today. The land was I believe purchased from the Aylesbury Dairy Company in the late eighteen nineties for around £5,00...
