Re: Current reading matter

Also highly recommend One Day which I read in the summer holidays.
Just about to start Landfalls by Tim Mackintosh-Smith - the third of his books on the legendary traveller Ibn Battutah who is quite possibly the person I would most like to spend an evening with.

[quote]Have just started readin my Christmas Present of "Blue Murder", which is fascinating, but "Navy Blue Breeches" are mentioned.[/quote

Neill, I have no idea when navy blue breeches came in but they have certainly been the only colour Will has had.

CH on Blue Peter

CH on Blue Peter on 6th and 7th September Christ's Hospital pupils make an appearance in The Blue Peter 'Amazing Schools' film this week when presenters Helen Skelton and Barney Harwood look at "some of the more unusual and amazing schools around the UK". The film, made last term, is set t...

Re: Could someone tell me

Good luck to all the new parents tomorrow - it's a great day even though it is one of very mixed emotions. I'll second drawing pins as they all have noticeboards they can pin stuff up on - including postcards from home :) Send post - they love to get it. Don't expect to receive post - I'm sure they ...

Re: Could someone tell me

Welcome to the club Jodz! I'd say just not to go overboard with home clothes - they don't need a lot more than school recommends and you have to lug it forwards and backwards all the time. Go with fewer items for the first 3 weeks and see what is missing. If you overdo it to start with your DD/DS wi...

Re: results

28 of the 30 pupils undertaking IGCSE gained an A* in the new further Maths exam, with over half of pupils being awarded the new “A* with distinction” grade. See what I mean? Surely an indication of grade inflation gone mad!! I am not sure how you see this as grade inflation. As you rightly point o...

Re: Olympics trip

I think the Paralympics and the Olympics should be combined and the events be all intermingled. I don't see why the 2 events have to be separated at all.

Re: Just checking....shoes

I keep an eye on ebay and buy a size ahead. I rarely pay more than £5 for DMs Me too! Usually have a spare pair on top of the wardrobe for when he needs them. Couldn't get DMs last time though so got some ex-police stock. You can also try searching for 'royal mail shoes', 'cadet shoes' or 'parade s...

windows office on them ie PowerPoint, excell and word which they use at school You don't have to pay extra for Microsoft Office - you can download OpenOffice for nothing and it is completely compatible with Microsoft - this is what my DS has on his netbook and has had no problems. http://www.openof...

Re: laptops

I don't know whether there is a policy about when students can take laptops as this is quite new. My DS is going into UF and last year was the first year that the school had a wi-fi network that they opened up to students. It looks like they are now expanding it and encouraging more students to take...

Re: laptops

I specifically got my DS a netbook rather than a laptop as it has no disc drive so I thought he was less likely to take any of his games or films back. He is also only allowed to use it at school so that he hopefully doesn't get tempted to download stuff at home on to it. I also 'clean' it up each h...

Re: laptops

I will also confess that DS went back to school last year with a second-hand netbook. I do believe that it has helped his studies as he often couldn't get on the house computers. Internet access has been a bit patchy although I noticed the letter said wi-fi access ws being improved. Has he used it i...

Re: laptops

Well, as a parent of a teenage boy (and I don't want to embarrass him!), so will careful word my reply as to whether boys are more prone to mis-using the internet than girls. I think boys are more open about the fact that they and their friends have viewed porn stuff. Girls don't admit to that stuff...
