"I was like...." translates as "I said....."
A perfectly reasonable idiom that you'll find in any half-decent dictionary.

It's not wrong just because you don't use it.

Re: The Pedant's Revolt

Journalists (and others) who report on pedophiles as people who commit unspeakable acts against children. I find American spelling to be remarkably ugly, and still use double vowels whenever I can get away with (publishing in British, but not American or Australian, journals for example). However, ...

Re: The Pedant's Revolt

I am going to have to check this* because I think gotten is part of the verb 'to get' in old English, well 17th/18th century English, as are many 'Americanisms'. As for honor, color, flavor etc, I think they are also from the same period. Oh, 'gotten' is a perfectly good English word. It's largely ...

Re: The Pedant's Revolt

Am I the only person to hate being asked what my name WAS? Next time I shall ask "When?" Please, all you pedants out there join the battle to rid the world of this expression. Maggie On the contrary: the receptionist is the pedant here. She wants to know what your name was when you made t...

Re: Problem - Running out of space on the CH Forum - ideas?

Most other forums I am on have a rule that if a topic hasn't been touched for 12 months it is archived (except technical queries) - however with this particular forum I think that means we coul dend up with repeat threads, so it might not help. Has the school got a server with the odd couple of ter...

Re: Problem - Running out of space on the CH Forum - ideas?

100Mb is nothing. It's hard to find a cell phone with that little storage.

Bandwidth might be more of an issue. Do you know how much we're talking about?

Have 1and1 given any indication as to the specs of their shared server and what proportion of its resources we're consuming?

Re: Mailscanner - HELP!

A little research suggests it's more likely to do with the fact that the double-suffixed file was 'hidden' inside a zip file. What I can't work out is who is using MailScanner - Yahoo and Aol or my Thai ISP? And why has it only just kicked in, as I haven't changed a thing for at least 8 months? Yah...

Re: Good driver?

It's often observed that people overestimate their own driving skill. So I was expecting to see more 'better than average' votes. Perhaps we're all modest here. Or we're all *really* lousy drivers.

Good driver?

An experiment inspired in part by the mobile/driving thread: how would you rate yourself as a driver?

Re: Mobile/Driving

I know people say that, but I'm not sure I agree. It's not quite the same as talking to a passenger but it's not so very different. If my phone rings when I'm about to negotiate any sort of manoeuvre that requires maximum concentration, I don't answer it. Other than that, I am perfectly capable of ...

Re: Mobile/Driving

The thing that annoys me is not that people use their mobiles whilst driving - I can understand the desire to make phone calls and I don't think talking itself is a distraction (I know some people disagree) - but that they fork out for a mobile but then are too tight to shell out a bit extra for a ...

My fincee will have [...] statements from people in Brazil staying that we have been together for more than 2 years and letter from a company in the UK saying that I have a job with accomodation waiting for me. That's all evidence that she plans to settle. You need to decide whether she's visiting ...

Re: Returning to the UK

I can purchase a stamp or something that effectively makes my passport bi - er- national? However, I tend to think about doing it close to any trip that I make, and don't leave enough time to actually get one (no Embassy here, and the last I heard was that people were having to actually travel to M...

Re: Returning to the UK

Good luck with that. Larissa went through the whole immigration thing a few years back, so I had to learn about it then. At the time, it was fairly straightforward. The simplicity and humanity of it all made me proud to be British. It's changed since then, of course. You've got the Daily Mail to tha...

Re: Mugabe Query

Why is the term "racist" never used when a black majority are attacking a white minority? i.e. the white farmers? It is. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/6997168.stm It's not been that prominent in recent coverage, simply because racism is way down Mugabe's list of sins. The bigger prob...
