Re: World War 2, CH Teachers, etc

Fascinating! All these guys I had forgotten. Yes, I was taught by 'Hag' Hirst in the 3rd form (11 yr olds) and also by the rather uninspiring Mr Gerrish, who taught piano, not, as I remember, the 'cello. He was fond of speaking of his musical descent (i.e. who was taught by whom) from Beethoven. Eve...

Re: Gruesome Encounter of the Newsome Kind

What a wonderful thread! I now feel I know a little more about CH in those years which hitherto I have regarded as the dark ages which followed the glorious post-war years when I was there and preceded the Poulton/ Southern era when care supplanted survival. I did visit the school once in the sixtie...

Re: CH ARMS AND THE SWORD

Just shows, doesn't it! (I'm not sure what it shows, but it seems an appropriate comment.)

Re: RIP Sir Colin Davis

He was to be honoured with a lifetime achievement award on OB Day. I hope it can be given posthumously.

Re: CH ARMS AND THE SWORD

Whilst there is a serious side to all of this, I cannot stop laughing at Foureyes' wonderful revelations. Thank you, David :)

Re: CH ARMS AND THE SWORD

Well I never! I have just discovered that the improper display of armorial bearings is an offence! Now the strory is out, there may be those at Christ's Hospital waiting fearfully for the midnight knock at the door from the Serjeant at Arms (or whoever) wielding a warrant of arrest and accompanied b...

Re: CH ARMS AND THE SWORD

Music department on the ball - better give lessons on etiquette to the Counting House then. Some useful tips: Have respect for the drum. The drum and sacred songs are a ceremony in and of itself, be sure to treat it as such. Anything being passed at the drum should be passed clockwise around the dru...

Re: CH ARMS AND THE SWORD

Well so did I - but it clearly says Rose Argent, so we are all wrong. By playing around with the color, is CH not committing some sort of heinous lèse-majesté?

Re: CH ARMS AND THE SWORD

David, your last two posts were fascinating - I hope Jonathan has seen them in the midst of his naval duties. He posted originally on a thread about the Housey shop and Memorabilia which, like so many threads, became confused and unfocused. This link will put you somewhere in the right place http://...

Re: CH ARMS AND THE SWORD

Sorry for replying on an old thread, but I was looking for a description of the CH coat of arms and found this very helpful: Just for the record, I have done a bit of delving and the correct description of the Christ's Hospital coat-of-arms is: "...argent, a cross gules in the dexter chief, a ...

Re: CH ARMS AND THE SWORD

Just for the record, I have done a bit of delving and the correct description of the Christ's Hospital coat-of-arms is: "...argent, a cross gules in the dexter chief, a dagger of the first on a chief azure between two fleurs-de-lis, or, a rose argent." Well, that has settled that!
