Re: SPECIAL NEEDS AT CH

I have to say I think that Sarah's story is quite appalling. It would be perhaps important, and certainly helpful, to hear the school's 'take', but that's hardly likely to happen on the Forum, I presume. Having been a successful pupil myself, it has been a salutary eye-opener to read some of the cri...

Re: Smoking by CH pupils

Oh, and DJD used to smoke his cigarettes in a little cigarette-holder – a mild dandyism, I suppose. :) And he had a habit of pushing his fingers through his hair which for some reason sticks in my mind when I think of him smoking.

Re: Smoking by CH pupils

My Dad had smoked a pipe; we had a close family friend, a country doctor, who smoked a pipe pretty well continuously all day long; so it seemed obvious to me that as I grew up, I would smoke a pipe too. It was a disappointment to find that it is a messy, wet and fussy business; and after a teenage p...

Re: Death of Pat Daunt (Horsham Staff 53-65)

May he rest in peace and rise in glory. I think he already had (and shared) a good dose of the light perpetual in his lifetime. Like Mike Scuffil, I remember him as one of my favourite teachers - unstuffy, enthusiastic, his time in Sydney having been pretty far on the left, a pro-comprehensive educa...

buttons - on the sleeve?

On Friday 15 November, I was passing through London and so had the opportunity to attend the CH musicians' lunchtime concert in St Martin's in the Fields: a Shostakovich string quartet, and Britten's lovely piece 'Rejoice in the Lamb'. As it happened, with this being the 100th anniversary of Benjami...

Re: Saluting

My mother 'Ma Massen' loved being called Sir. I can't remember her being saluted in the school grounds, perhaps this was only outside the "ring fence". ... I don't remember ever saluting your mother or any other member of staff, and I certainly didn't call her 'sir' (although she never ta...

Re: Roger Martin

It's 7 (seven) years since anyone posted on this thread, which I hadn't noticed until relatively recently. And then a fellow Old Blue posted a link to the YouTube segments of the Remembrance Day Service 1988; and having myself for the first time led a Remembrance Sunday service just last weekend (10...

Re: Edward Malins

It is curious that one of the few actual memories I have of Gad teaching concerns Keith the author of the previous post. We had had to write a story in the style of the 18th century (this was the UFA, i.e. third year), and Gad commented that he liked the authentic manner in which Keith combined the...

Re: Edward Malins

I have a slightly different take on Edward Malins. I was in his English class for 2 years, I guess (LF & UF?), & thoroughly enjoyed our lessons. But then my mother, also an English teacher, intrigued by my enthuisasm, asked me to tell her more concretely about his teaching - & to my acut...

Re: 6 page article in today's Telegraph magazine

Btw/ — forgive my ignorance — but yes, I've now spotted girl #2 lurking in the background. But when do the girls wear yellow and when grey stockings? Looking at other pictures, it doesn't for example simply go with best dress and everyday, as my wife has a photo she dug up from somewhere showing two...

Re: 6 page article in today's Telegraph magazine

It was a pity that in all the pictures (which were fun), there seemed to be only 1 girl shown.

Re: St Matthews Day Parade

Dear Michael – Well, I had certainly not expected a response from the Lead Drum Major in person! Thanks for your comment: Keibat; My deepest apologies! Unfortunately, we were limited in terms of time and space in the Guildhall Yard, and so it was not possible to perform a 'toss' at that particular p...
