Re: Leigh Hunt House Photos...

The Leigh Hunt A photo from early 1969 is fascinating! I arrived in LHA as a third-former in September 69, a few months after the photo was taken, so it's great to look back and remember some names from the distant past. There were a few of us in LHA from the West London area, such as Dudley Der Par...

Re: So, the underground tunnels...

There are official tours on Old Blues Day Indeed Julian, there are. My girlfriend and I had a very enjoyable - and lengthy - guided tour of the Tube on Old Blues Day 2011. It was great fun, and we learnt a lot. The tour took us from Peele to Leigh Hunt, with a little diversion up one of the cloiste...

Scalextric shocker...

I was a huge Scalextric fan before I got to CH, and was delighted to find a four-lane Scalextric set when I arrived in LHA. It was great to race the set's Panther and Europa Vee grand prix cars, but after a while they felt a little slow and pedestrian. Consequently it wasn't too long before we start...

Re: Cabinet of Curiosities

Terrific story Simon, briliantly written. I had no idea that the Rev Atkinson was such an ogre. He always struck me as rather ineffectual. Clearly I was totally mistaken. What a sad end to your days at CH... And to put the record straight, David Newsome had four daughters, including Janet, who becam...

Re: HITLER YOUTH AT HOUSIE

I may have the answer to this original thread. My late father - J.F. Strange - was in Mid A in the 1930s. He told me that a group of German boys came to stay at CH shortly before the war. I am unclear why the Germans were at the school, although it's possible it could have been an exchange visit as ...

Re: FAIRY CAKES NEWSOME

Back to Fairy Cakes Newsome... By the late 1960s, the Seamans were regularly inviting a small group of squits to tea each Sunday afternoon. I was one of the last squits to receive this honour in late 1969. As far as I can recall, each week squits were chosen from the different junior houses, so one ...

Re: Ramos, Ramos, Ramos

Adrian 'Tod' Ramos was a year or so above me in Peele A. A real card, he was a keen equestrian at CH, regularly riding his horse around the outer reaches of the school grounds. I may be wrong, but I believe the horse was named 'Bene'. It may be CH myth, but at one stage while Tod was riding the hors...

Re: Wooden legs

Er, this thread seemed to fizzle out some time back as the arboreal references took over. So back to Kit Aiken... I remember Kit for a number of reasons. He would normally arrive for Latin/General Classics lessons on board his modified bicycle. This had a pedal removed on one side, so that he could ...

Re: Fashions in Music at CH

Well if Caroline Sullivan says it happened, I guess it must be true... There again, there is such a thing as poetic licence. I'll ask Sullivan next time I see her. We're still in touch.

Re: Fashions in Music at CH

Strippergrams? Yes, I vaguely remember that sort of thing happening at MM... I'm not sure about one actually visiting me at my desk at the Maker Mansions, although it may have happened. It's all a bit of a haze now... What I do recall more clearly was Tenpole Tudor marching in to the office and lobb...

Re: Fashions in Music at CH

Wow! That's an amazingly long thread! Clearly contemporary music has played a huge part in many people's lives at CH. It certainly did for me during the early 70s, leading to an eventual career as a pop music journalist in the early 80s. When I first arrived at CH (LHA, 1969), the singles chart was ...

Re: Chris Nicholson and other favourite masters...

Thanks for the comments, chaps. It's a fascinating forum, and nice to contribute to it. My understanding was that Chris Nicholson was called "Bomber" because he was always "bombing around" in his car, but perhaps there's another explanation... And yes, Greg Strange is my brother....

Chris Nicholson and other favourite masters...

Hi. Bit of a squit here what with my first post and everything, but here goes... I've been really enjoying all the CH memories on this forum. Absolutely tremendous, especially the stories about (don't be vague, ask for) Miss Haigh, Mongy Torkington (who I believe I just missed; what a shame), Rip Ki...
