Re: Flecker’s Banning of some Comics

Several posts above refer to 'collecting beer mats.' I do not say that some may have been collecting such mats, but I believe that most (including me) collected LABELs; i.e. the designs that were glued to the bottles rather than placed on the table. And it wasn't just beer either, but included wine ...

Re: Old and New London by Walter Thornbury

Gosh - a thank you! Very grateful for that, Katherine. As a matter of interest last night's edition of Antiques Roadshow showed a book Rationes Decem , in its first edition of 1581. It was written by a famous Old Blue - and, as far as I know - our only official saint, Edmund Campion (1540-1581)(CH 1...

Re: Old and New London by Walter Thornbury

It seems to me that there is a misunderstanding here. Henry VIII gave some former monastic buildings to the Lord Mayor 'for the relief of the poor' but that was simply buildings. At no point that I can find did Henry specify that they were to be used as a school, so he was definitely not the 'founde...

Re: Korea veteran Sam Mercer dies at 91

He was certainly at C.H. but cannot have been very happy as he 'ran away.' Must have been a story there.

Apologies. Made an error in previous post. Shipping line was ELDERS & FYFFES and NOT Elder Dempster. My mistake.

Re: Ernest Christopher "Kit" Aitken

"brother sailing first class" SS Ariguani carried 99 passengers, ALL First-Class, so there was no Second-Class or steerage option. He went out to Kingston aboard SS Carare , sailed from Bristol 1 July 1938. This was also an Elder Dempster vessel and a sister-ship of Ariguani , so also onl...

Re: Ernest Christopher "Kit" Aitken

Further to the above, Kit's twin brother Rev Aubrey Aitken (1911-1985) was a curate in Kingston at the time (1937-40), so presumably it was a family reunion!

Re: Ernest Christopher "Kit" Aitken

To fill in some of the details: Kit was born 2 August 1911 in Smallburgh, Norfolk. School unknown. University. Trinity College, Oxford. 'Good' degree in History. Joined C.H. staff 1934. Junior housemaster in Prep. Moved to Giggleswick school just before the war. Commissioned Royal Norfolk Regiment 1...

TO THE MODERATORS
Could you please look at this thread? It is listed under 'General Chat - CH Stuff' but now has nothing whatsoever to do with CH. Allied to that there is a thread on the non-CH site which seems to cover this subject. So, can you please transfer all this to the latter?

Fascinating video. Thank you. I particularly like the shelves for the left elbows and spare ammunition.

Re: UNDERGROUND BUNKER

sejintenej says: " Not a bunker but during my early days at CH the fields opposite Shelleys Wood had many vertical posts presumably to deter aircraft landings " Absolutely correct. That was slightly before my time, but records clearly state that such posts were placed in open spaces to det...

Re: UNDERGROUND BUNKER

Brian,
Since posting my earlier reply I have checked the name of that small wood and you are absolutely spot-on - Sparrow Copse it is. Your memory is better than mine. Thanks again,

Re: UNDERGROUND BUNKER

Brian, Thank you - that is a most helpful reply. I had not thought of the possible water-management explanation and will mention that possibility when I send the info to the Resistance Archive people. I cannot remember the precise location with any clarity (old age!) but suspect that if it was used ...

UNDERGROUND BUNKER

I see that British Resistance Archive is asking for possible bunkers used by the 'Resistance Army.' I can recall seeing a possible candidate at C.H., but would welcome confirmation before I contact them. The place I remember was at approx 51 degrees 03 min North, 0 degrees 09 min West.In other words...
