Re: CH Water Tower

One of its functions I remember was to be measured in Trig class to try and estimate its height, knowing your distance from the base and the angle to the top. "estimate"? Shame on you! You mean "calculate". But yes, this was to demonstrate the practical value of tangents. I can'...

Re: CH Horsham on Google Street View

The 'Dead Zone' is clearly an Intergalactic Portal, or maybe a Time Warp. Either way we should be alert for unexplained disappearances in the area. It might also explain some of the stranger teachers over the years.

Re: Picture in the Times ? Housey

Great picture. Gas light is the same as Times picture. Suggest photo taken same time as the Times version but slightly to the left and nearer the end wall. Height of window above ground-no way of looking out again points to late 19th century architecture for schools. However what is the ladder that...

Quite right! I remember thinking “If only there was a nice bunch of roses sitting under a Monet reproduction, everything would be fine”

Re: Jokes, please.....

An elderly man goes to see his doctor: He says "You've got to help me. For weeks I've been farting almost non-stop. Luckily they are silent and odorless, but its still embarrassing. In fact, just since I've been here I must have farted ten times." The doctor nods and then says "I'm wr...

. I also used to read to them on a Saturday, mainly Ian Fleming from what I can remember. Ah yes: pushing the limits of allowed sexuality with James Bond stories. Actually the thing that sticks in my memory was being read Dracula and the door to the dorm creaking open at just the right moments for ...

Re: C.H. CAPE PHOTO WANTED

Weren't the jabots ditched because of a rather dangerous accident involving a bunsen burner or was that just a rumour??? The story I have heard so far is that the original yellow tights had to be binned because they laddered on those high chemistry stools and, yes, the jabots (or, perhaps, just one...

Re: The Arthur Rider Song

I had Arthur Rider for five consecutive years: I have to be honest and say I did not appreciate him at the time, but I am constantly amazed at how well my French has held up over 40 years and I have to believe that it was his teaching (and emphasis on spoken French) that is the key. On a different n...

Re: Twins

I remember the Bisset twins in Lamb B who came equal first in the steeplechase in 1962. Another name that rings a very distant bell !! I also remember them. Were they not the ones who bought proper running shoes and actually trained? Memories of Flanders and Swan: "They argue with umpires, the...

I was walking through Central Park and heard more sirens that I could ever remember. In those days it wasn’t the best place to be at night so I got out, walked home and the news was on every channel.

Re: New houseparents' accommodation on the back avenue

Which reminds me, on that asphalt we used to have PE after the first 2 classes, but that stopped in about 1961/2. I never asked why?[/quote] It might be that the smell of a classroom of boys after 15 minutes exercise with no chance to wash (let alone shower) eventually caused a revolt among the teac...
