Re: Shrove Tuesday Plays

I don't remember Shrove Tuesday plays, Katharine, so perhaps they were discontinued soon after you left. In fact, I don't remember marking Shrove Tuesday at all, except that we had batter pudding with golden syrup for afters at lunchtime, as an inadequate substitute for pancakes.

Re: Compulsory Games...

I don't remember any organised team games at my inner London primary school. Possibly we played rounders, but not netball or hockey. (Which is odd, now I come to think of it, because my brother played football). The new games must have been explained to me when I reached CH (we even had hockey theor...

Re: Herts Memories

Lovely photos. I like the slightly cross-looking "I've drawn the short straw again" stance of the girl in the gym slip. I think Veronica Humphrey must be the lady I met at the great Hertford reunion a few years ago. She insisted that I would be sure to remember her, but I really didn't. I ...

Re: Do You Still Appear In a Swimsuit in Public?

I don't like sunbathing, but I still appear in public in a swimsuit when I want to swim. I've never noticed anyone pointing and sniggering (but of course, I am very short-sighted).

Seriously, I'm less self-conscious now than when I was at school, even though I am a lot fatter.

I don't know what to say either. But Midget's attitude makes me proud to have gone to the same school.

Re: Books studied in English

We did "My Family and Other Animals" with Mrs Betterton. Some of the class laughed so much they almost fell out of their desks, but I just found it gently amusing. I can't remember anything between that and "Bran the Bronzesmith", though there must have been at least one book per...

A labrador? Loyal, hardworking, sporty but not playful, slightly stocky, good with young children.

I hope you feel better soon, Angela. Be sure to have an official birthday when you are well enough to enjoy it.

Re: "Screw Kick!"

I remember the coloured stripes being orange or yellow, but they may have started out red and been faded by the chlorine in the pool. The first three were awarded for good style in various strokes (breaststroke, crawl and backstroke?) and the fourth was for lifesaving. The stripes were sewn on in di...

Re: BOYS' SHOES

Our outdoor shoes were supplied by the school, but we had to provide our own house shoes, slippers and sports shoes (plimsoles and hockey boots).

Re: Desks

The rules said that fountain pens and wrist watches had to be engraved with our names, but didn't specify exactly how. My mother, being hard-up and resourceful, scratched my initials onto my pen herself.
