Re: Trump - I don't wanna go!
The problem with reforming the US electoral process is that it is embedded in the Constitution. To change it would require not just passing both houses but also to be approved by 75% of the States. Since none of the smaller States are likely to approve a change, as it would reduce their influence, t...

Disabilities 50s, 60s
Thinking back, I cannot remember any students with disabilities. Certainly no blind or wheelchair-bound, but not even any that were excused participation in sports. Was I simply unobservant, or did the school avoid accepting such students?

Re: School Chaplains
Just as well. He was probably too p*ssed. A lovely guy actually. He was, as the late lamented Dr Scuffil has observed, almost certainly homosexual. Nothing wrong with that of course, but back then definitely socially a bit of a problem in the outside world (ie outside the English boarding school). ...

Re: Pocket money, Nausea and more
Memories of trunks and even suitcases being lugged around, with the resultant arm, back and shoulder pain, make me wonder why wheeled luggage didn’t exist back then. Certainly the technology was available. All I can think is that most people who traveled a lot tended to have money and always paid ot...

Re: What Doesn't Happen At CH These Days?
I recall Sergeant Guest sporting an army woolly pully but never saw him in any sort of uniform. As for what his duties were in my day, beyond supervising drills and swimming lessons and overseeing the Post Office, I have no idea. I never once saw him enter a classroom. Did he do things on Field Day...

Re: Cross-country runs
Probably the more feared for me was Two Mile Ash to Tower Hill, down Parthings Lane, across several clay fields, swim/wade across the stream leading to Doctor’s Pond up past the Infirmary and back to the house. The only plus was, at the right time of year, Parthings Lane was loaded with blackberries...

Re: GRACE
The Grecians’ ballroom dancing classes ended because Mr DCF Chaundy, who initiated and taught them (a teacher of physics, very pleasant chap and junior housemaster in Barnes A) left CH for a post at Malvern College. He was a most enthusiastic folk dancer and successfully taught ballroom and Morris ...

Re: GRACE
Slightly off tangent but another area of responsibility was the conducting of the Band for the Lunch Parade formation before marching in. Two three beat drum rolls followed by a bang on the Bass Drum, repeated once. My memory is it started with a crescendo/diminuendo to get our attention. Then, Two...

Clearly the slices were so thin that they exhibited ‘thin film interference’ just like the rainbow patters seen on oil films.

[quote=MrEd post_id=148130 time=1592167274 user_id=205After doing a biological sciences degree many moons ago, I recently enquired about an M.Sc in Marine Biology at Aberystwyth, I have to say that I was delighted to have been offered a plaice.

Re: CH, Degrees and PPE (not the Coronavirus sort)
Well, since I went even less than red brick (Prifysgol Bangor), I’m not sure CH would even tally mine. For what it’s worth my bachelors was in Zoology/Oceanography. After emigrating to Saskatchewan the Oceanography became somewhat moot and all my later work was in Molecular genetics/Cell biology.

Re: Leave Days in Horsham
Are Leave Days a renamed ‘Whole Holiday’ that forced us off the grounds with a brown paper bag containing a fish paste sandwich and a shriveled apple? Those with money went boating at Amberley, the broke but brave hitchhiked to Brighton and the rest huddled outside the school fence until it was time...

Sometime in the 50s you could opt out of the CCF and do odd jobs around the grounds. Do any members have additional information about this?

Dining hall dimensions
Getting away from the current doom and gloom, and the political diatribes: does anyone know the dimensions of the dining hall? I can find how much it costs to rent, along with other unwanted information, but not its size.
