Compare that with the 'gentility' at Hertford, where in the infirmary the Sister would ask each day 'Have you been good today?' - it was a while before I realised what she was actually asking!

Mary Thompson, teacher of chemistry, was a formidable Irish woman, with a tough exterior which hid a heart of gold! She did not arrive at CH until after I had left, but I met her many years later when I used to visit her and Frances Mercer in their cottage in County Kerry.

Angela - I went to the St Matthew's Day service in London just a week into the first term of the merger. I remember commenting at the time that It was impossible to tell from the quality of the music that the choir and musicians had only been working together for such a short time.

Re: Bursary information
Jo, I was told this by a struggling parent who had asked for an explanation of why their fees kept increasing although their income did not. The HM's reply was along the lines of 'we are running a business; you would not ask your bank how they arrive at their charges'! Frankly at this point I just l...

Try getting an old-fashioned pen, with a sharp nib, and some washproof ink and altering them by hand? Or just leave them as they are - I doubt if it will be a major problem! Don't panic. Good luck.

Re: When the girls arrived..
Clearly the upheaval for the girls was greater than for the boys. My two were lucky in that the move came at a natural break in their academic career - ie one was just about to start GCSE subjects and the other had just taken GCSEs and was moving onto A levels. But I feel sorry for those who were ha...

Re: When the girls arrived..
But Vonny, compare that with the dormitory set-up that we had at Hertford before they built the cubies in upper dorms; bright mustard yellow curtains hanging from black metal poles to separate the beds from each other (but only supposedly for dressing in privacy) - in fact we didn't use them - we qu...

Both my daughters were amongst those involved in the great migration from Hertford to Horsham, otherwise known as CHAOS (Christ's Hospital Amalgamation of Sites (?Schools). I shall nudge the one who still sometimes contributes to this forum, for her reminiscences. I do remember at that time ploughin...

Totally unrelated, but in a similar vein of 'humour' - Alison, a CH friend of my daughter's, who went on to work as a pharmacist, married a guy called Branch, thereby becoming A Branch of Boots!

Re: The Making of Them by Nick Duffel
I can't say it works for me! Angela Pratt and I were the same year at Hertford - she remembers all the good stuff and I remember all the bad, but I tend to do that about life in general anyway!!

Re: Horsham 1954-62
I vaguely remember a portrait of Barnes Wallis at Hertford. Also I believe that Miss West's portrait was actually a photo, or possibly a portrait painted from a photo (not unusual, I think), but the rumour was that she didn't have the patience to actually sit for a portrait to be painted. Given the ...

Certainly makes you more tired later - my body tends to wake with the sun (about 4.30 at the moment) so I am too tired by mid afternoon to consider whether I am being honest or not!! Fortunately I don't have an evening social life - or perhaps that is a lie?
