Both Jack Bailey and Lt Col John Stephenson were Secretary of the MCC - but obviously not at the same time!
For those interested I can confirm today that The Band will be playing at Lords on Sun 1st July between innings in the England v West Indies one dayer. (approx. 2.15)

John was indeed Secretary of the MCC. He played rugby for Sussex, but his highest representative level in cricket was playing for the Army. He stayed with me once before a tour fund-raiser. He was an absolutely charming man from the old school.

Tom Godfrey captained England U16 in 1981, I think. His brother Nick Godfrey played for England U16 in 1984. Elijah Sobanjo played for England U16 in 1997, England U18 in 1998 and England U18A in 1999 Andrew Higgins played for England U18 in 1999. Those are rugby representatives, although I believe ...

Joe plays No8/lock and is in the "long list" of 60 from whom 22 will make the England U16 Squad and a further 22 will make the England A squad.
Cross one's fingers that he will become fully fit in time for possible selection.

Enough already! C.H. played Brighton College on Sat 14th Oct with matches commencing at the unusual time of 1.00 (1st XV at 1.30) as it was the start of half-term. When the fixture was arranged it was understood that Brighton's top 24 boys would be absent at the Festival of rugby at St.Joseph's in I...

Two out of four - right so far!
Robinson will be out of a job by December. I suppose the buck has to stop somewhere, but our players remain overcoached and lacking in flair.

Clutching at straws, Martin. The All Blacks were 21 points better than us - the record books will show that. My fear is that this scoreline flattered a very average England side who possess a low skill level and a paucity of ideas. On reflection a margin of 30-40 points would not have been out of th...

Amy, with all due respect your assessment is typical of the English eternal optimist. We were at least two rungs down the ladder in terms of pace, power, professionalism and execution of thought and deed. We are becoming a second class nation at this sport. Is that 5 or 6 defeats on the trot now?

20-41 - the biggest ever defeat at Twickenham. We all know that the ref made a bad call early on, but the All Blacks with a touch more precision (match rustiness?) could easily have won by 40 or 50. The game in England is at its lowest ebb for 10 or 12 years. We need to be honest about that, recogni...

English rugby? Don't make me laugh. Surely the top two words are mutually exclusive since we sold our soul to Sky and set up a foreign training ground in the Premiership. Exactly how many fly-halves in the Premiership are qualified to play for England? Even five years ago the game was fun to watch. ...
