Re: WATER TOWER

In my day it was clearly known as being 120 feet high. In a Maths class with I R McConnell we once did some trig exercises and surveyed the tower with some rudimentary surveyor's tools, so I remember the 'official' height clearly. Not sure whether the quoted height of 120 feet was to the peak of th...

“ EDIT: just seen some figures. These suggest that of those tested for the virus 3.7% died.”
So, obviously the safe thing is to not get tested! :D

Re: COVID19

Since we are planning a visit to England next month, we are keeping a careful eye on things. We recognize that, both being in our 70s, we are in a potential high-risk group. On the other hand we are both in excellent health and neither even catch colds most years, so are fairly optimistic. One good ...

I could deal with those, but mine are for D cup swimwear!

Re: Tuck parcels

I fondly remember tuck parcels. When I missed a family birthday, I would get a parcel in the form of an empty plastic butter container containing a slice of birthday cake. I would also get the occasional refill of Pengiuns, Wagon Wheels, biscuits, etc. I am relieved to read this. I was beginning to...

Tuck parcels

Katherine’s comment about a box of grapes triggered memories of the arrival of a tuck parcel, always a momentous occasion for the individual and closest friends. Ones from my aunt Margaret were always special. Not only did she include the best items (Rum/raisin Toblerone, dark chocolate digestive, c...

Re: Writing letters home

My memory is that it was after morning chapel, but this may have varied by house. I have none of my letters (a great loss to my biographers) but suspect they were all simply variations on “I am alive, please send food”. I can’t say the repetition paid off, I don’t think I wrote once a term at univer...

Re: An interesting date today !

Certainly capicua will join my “Do we really need a word for this?” list. My current favorite is a pair of words with exactly the same meaning. Carphology and floccilation both mean “A nervous plucking at the sheet or blanket “

Cross-country runs

I have vivid memories of slogging across clay fields, even swimming across a river, always with the temperature under 5 and with rain falling at a 45 degree angle. They seemed to last forever, but does anyone have an idea of how long they really were?

Re: Politics

I've been waiting for this forum to light up following the elections. Maybe no one feels they have anything left to say. Over here the impeachment is slowly making the way to its inevitable end: the House passes the Articles, the Senate either votes to not agree to a trial at all, or it goes to tria...

Re: Politics

An easy answer. Make voting compulsory, but add 'NONE OF THE ABOVE' at the bottom of ballot papers. There are places where, if NOTA exceeds 50%, the election has to be rerun and none of the original candidates can stand again I like it, but given the calibre of our current choices, we'd soon run ou...
