Re: From the sublime to the ridiculous

Inthe late 50's housemen got about £20 a month, so any extra was greatly appreciated. However there was no time to spend it.

Re: Weeds or wildflowers?

I think that ground elder was introduced by the Romans as a food crop. Apparently the leaves are cooked like spinach. Doubtless if you develope a taste for it, it will disappear.

Re: 65th Anniversary Of VE Day

A patient of mine was an officer in the tank corps. He saw action in Normandy, and for the rest of his life had nightmares every night. I doubt if he told anyone else about them, other than his wife. I am sure that the traumas of war are under estimated

Re: Michael Marland

I think that he was a Roman Catholic, and thus excused Sunday evening chapel. It was alleged that, during the chapel service, he got into the masters' common room from the tube, by using a service lift, and liberated a bottle of wine. If this is true I certainly never got a taste.

Re: Strange old man dressed in WW1 army gear / dog named lob

Another thing that I remember about Bill Kirby was that he had a seemingly inexaustable supply of jokes, all fresh. There was a theory that each joke would resurface after about 30 years or so, and that he had a good memory, and could tell the joke again before it became well known.

Re: Leavers and fees

I am very sad to read all this, and the thought that fees are rising too rapidly and too high for some parents. The costs to the school and foundation have risen at a greater rate than the cost of living due, amongst other things, to new legislation on the care of children at school. In spite of cut...

I have tried using the links suggested to add a few more details, but they do not seem to work. I am not very computerate. Pehaps some one could make it simple.

Re: Favourite teacher

For myself Bill Kirby was the best. He looked forward to the day when I would get a secretary, as he, and everyone else, deplored my bad writing. Every report complained about it. I have a soft spot for Reggie Dean; I only knew him for one term, after I had failed O-level French. He taught Finch and...

Re: Strange old man dressed in WW1 army gear / dog named lob

Bill Kirby, whose photograph in the leaving grecians group, used to hang outside the headmaster's study, went up to Cambridge to study medicine on a scholarship. After he finished his preclinical course he was due to go on to study clinical medicine at one of the London teaching hospitals. Unfortuna...

Corks sits between David McKie (was on the Guardian as political editor) and Kit in 1953 Col A house photo. He was slimmer in 1946 when he joined the house. His father was the rector of Winchelsea, Sussex, and Corks once came to visit me in Hastings where I lived. He certainly drank with Kit when th...

Re: First Day.....Last Day

First Day September 1946. We all arrived by various trains (I can not remember the journey at all). Then all new boys and their parent(s) gathered in Dining Hall; each boy's name was called, and the house that he was to go in. One then went , with parent, to that house's table. The most frequently c...

When CH was built at Horsham, there must have been detailed architect's drawings, which would have shown all the tube system. Does anyone know where they are now? Indeed, who were the architects? and are their offices still in existent. If so they may have a copy. Itshould be safe to consult the pla...

I think that Chlorine (and the rest of the halogens) were born to Hibben. Does any one remember Uncle's 4 Ducks, Quat, Er, Cent and Enery. I think the fox got them.
