Re: Sex 'n' Drugs 'n' Rock'n'Roll Part 1: Substance Abuse
In about 1966 the Observer (or maybe the Sunday Times) brought out a full-page story (with photo) with the headline "Confessions of an Oxford Drug Addict". The junkie in question was an OB in JR's house (whom he'll doubtless remember) called A***** M***t. For his pains he was rusticated fr...

Re: GRECIANS PATH
Grecians' Path... aka Snobs' Alley. But I imagine it had its origins in the "Grecs' Cloi" in London. That was foe grecians only, and I suppose this was an attempt to continue the exclusivity. It lasted certainly until the mid-60s, and unlike most Button Grecian privileges (bikes in school,...

Smoothy was Peter Brotherton, if I've got the name right. I've seen smooth operators before, but this guy was amazing - he was smooth to EVERYBODY!
except to the nurse he jilted.

Re: Sex 'n' Drugs 'n' Rock'n'Roll Part 1: Substance Abuse
Drugs weren't really 'fashionable' in my day. Gold Leaf cigarettes and the occasional Worthington 'E' - Yes. JR's day was my day and I think he's quite right. I think the episode I mentioned in the first post on this thread was the first, and probably a one-off for a while. As for Worthington E, we...

Re: Whole Holiday
In my day, as it was summer term, we wore blazers and grey flannels etc. And grecians could wear "civvies". I remember someone reading grace for tea in his civvies (that was fine) but WITHOUT A JACKET!! That caused a hoo-ha. And english angel, that's how I remember Butlin's Littlehampton ...

This is reminiscent of what the "left-behinds" in Horsham had to put up with on St Matthew's Day.Katharine wrote: In the afternoon there were silly games on the school field with silly prizes.

Re: Whole Holiday
It occurs to me that Whole Holidays were a standard feature of public school life in those days. I remember reading a Billy Bunter story "Billy Bunter's Banknote", in which a Whole Holiday features -- but that took a more exotic turn than anything we did at CH: the "Bounder" spen...

Re: Whole Holiday
I remember the Whole Holiday with a shiver, at least to start with, because I could think of no way of spending it. In 1959, we even had two, as "by command of Her Majesty the Queen" (that's what it said on the notice!) we had another for Princess Margaret's wedding. Second-year and button...

Re: Grecians' phone calls
I've just opened this thread for the first time and realized what it's all about. I have not been affected. I'm not quite sure how I would react. However my other Alma Mater, Emmanuel College Cambridge, has certainly practised it on me. As Emm Coll was nothing more than an up-market hall-of-residenc...

Incidentally I have now implemented the arrangement I was proposing for myself in the first posting on this thread, and am very happy with it. I believe I have also converted my wife.
