Do your neighbours and your family-members enjoy your playing the viola?

Re: Roger Martin - trial

The fact that he had a problem and was in close quarters with young boys for so many years suggests that he might have caused more damage both at CH and perhaps elsewhere (Kenya?). The horrors of anything he might have done in Kenya may never be known. As for anything that may or may not have occur...

Re: Roger Martin - trial

I'm finding this the most difficult conviction of all to deal with. Up until now, those found guilty have ranged from the not especially likeable to the downright creepy. But lots of former Barnes A boys will remember Roger Martin with very great fondness, both as a good housemaster (broadly speakin...

Re: History of the Band

A few days ago I was watching a YouTube video of the band taking part in 2018's Lord Mayor's Show and was staggered to see a row of bassoon players towards the rear of the squad. I was staggered not because I'm an ignoramus who doesn't know that bassoons are allowable in military bands, but because ...

Re: Roger Martin - trial

Or perhaps RM, at 82, is now in extremely poor health after all the pressure he's been under since last July. Or is he 83 now?

Re: Visiting the Tower in uniform

Simple enough to find out all the facts, surely? If anyone has sufficient motivation, that is.

This here's a link to the Historic Royal Palaces online enquiries form. They promise to respond within three days.

Demise of Paul Trill

Probably a few of us will recall Paul Trill, a 1970s pupil who by the early 1980s was serving in the US Navy. It appears he passed away in September 2017 in Minnesota. I found a remembrance page for him at https://www.legacy.com/obituaries/name/paul-trill-obituary?pid=186773847 His former Facebook i...

Re: Roger Martin

Personally I'm wondering whether the school authorities ever even made a note of the occasion on which the two boys from Barnes A went to Newsome to complain about RM's antics on behalf of the house. Newsome obviously had words with RM or the behaviour in question wouldn't have come to an immediate ...

Meanwhile, deep in the woods..... https://vgy.me/Pbn0P7.jpg So it seems we added an 'S' to it, in much the same way that the ignorant and the mentally challenged insist on calling their local supermarket Tesco's . Mind you, I could swear I once saw it marked on an old OS map with the caption 'Eastla...

Re: Expelled

Clarence used the cane on a friend of mine who later became house captain. His offence was to camp out one night and, worse still, have half the West Sussex police comb the county for him. He was in fact in Eastlands Copse. This from another thread entirely. Michael Scuffil attended CH in the1950s,...

Re: Expelled

For the record, Sharpenhurst barn stood close to the old reservoir building and was burned down way back in my own day, 1970s, rendering the Sharpenhurst skyline much less memorable thereafter. The copse next to Sharpenhurst was called Eastlands Copse, not Eastwood Copse. Or have even the names of t...

It's also been suggested that it formerly stood for 'Not Of Normal Criminal Element'. Quite how the true meaning has come to be lost track of is hard to imagine.

Re: Who Knew What?

I was just reading an article about how it took decades to bring to justice (in 2005) four sex-offender monks who taught at Ampleforth College, even though all the boys had known exactly what offences the monks had been repeatedly committing over the years. No doubt it was hoped, in 2005, that the t...
