Anyone remember the math teacher who would throw chalk (fairly accurately) at any boy talking in class? Yes, but his name escapes me for the moment. Smallish, Welshman? rugby player - but aren't they all. courted by Dimbleby (?) who went on to become an illustrious HM for a secondary comprehensive....

My pleasure, Rebel. My userid is one I used as a pen name some years ago when contributing to a business column in the South China Morning Post. Lamma is the island I live on in HK. The looker bit is partly from being a photographer and partly from being qualified as a Royal Navy observer (navigator...

I see you have managed to highlight the part of NA where you live. How did you do that?
I've just found out. Go to your profile, select profile settings and then the appropriate timezone.

That sounds Rip Kirby. He used to teach Biology and was famous for getting boys to strip off and stand on the science bench so that he could demonstrate human anatomy. He was also i/c the signals section in the Corps, hence the radio transmitters.

Please excuse my ignorance, but what is / was a "dame school"? To quote from my dictionary, "a small school, often in a village, usually run by an elderly woman in her own home to teach children to read and write." That's just what it was, except it was in a small town and the e...

The bromide theory That accounts for why the tea tasted so awful. The trouble with bromide is it only works on the mechanics, not the thought processes - a sort of anti-Viagra. the dark side of CH, which was all of it as far as I was concerned I'm curious as to why someone who was unhappy at school...

I think I have LaA house photos from 1950-54 but they're 8,000 miles away. I've asked my daughter to look them out and, if she eventually gets round to it, I'll post them.

Hendrik, you make me laugh, each generation thinks they know more about something (usually sex) than the previous one, in your case it is politics. We had an informed debate about the 6 day war and Vietnam was also pretty high on the agenda. We also all walked about with flowers in our hair (1966) ...

First, let me say that I'm happy to be English and to carry a British passport - though currently somewhat embarrassed by the activities of Mr Bliar (not a typo) & co. I have lived in Asia since 1989; prior to that I spent 2 years in Oman in the mid 80s and, during my RAF service, 3 years in Ger...

All this personal service in the mornings, how things have changed. In my day (apologies for sounding like an old w*nker) one man woke the whole school; Sgt Usher ringing the Big School bell at 5 to 7.
