Re: Daily Timetable

I concur wuth you Katharine. Except that I remember marching to breakfast and lunch throughout my time at Hertford - other than on Sundays after gravel crunching, but that was only in my last 2-3 years. (I think)

Re: Legacy letter

Time for some humble pie. Katharine and my posts crossed in posting. It was indeed a gracious and prompt reply from CH. I take it back about CH, although there are some male OBs who beggar belief sometimes - I suspect that they are a dying breed however.

Re: Legacy letter

I agree with you Katharine. It reads rather like "Whilst you (only) attended CH in Hertford rather than Horsham, (even) you know only too well how CH as an institution shapes lives ..." I must be having a paranoid day! At one OB's day, several years ago, an elderly OB who was standing behi...

Re: What Keith Douglas got up to at CH

Forgive my ignorance but ................ what in the world is a "first parting grecian"? Life sounds very complicated at Horsham compared with Hertford.

Ward/House changes

Since the boys are discussing this - how about us? I only remember the move from Junior Wards to Senior Wards, followed by the inevitable re-organisation when the Junior Wards closed.
I would have loved a Ward change (hated my Ward Mistress), but never heard of such a thing between '58 and '66.

Re: Shrove Tuesday Plays

Shrove Tuesday was always a welcome break from the total tedium of the Spring term. Anything was better than the hated Founder's day Dance. (Oh, but then I remember the conjurer/magician - that was toe-curling)

Re: Residential assessment?

I am with you HowardH! I have become increasingly frustrated with responses on several strands of this forum, both by OBs and others. CH remains a school which is brilliant at addressing real need, however it is defined. In it's current format the school offers a breadth of education to both the dis...

Re: End of term

Does anyone else remember sliding down the stairs from the dorms on their mattress on the last morning of term? Can't possibly have been an approved activity.

Re: End of term

Just Auld Lang Syne on the train coming into Liverpool Street in 3's. The astonishing thing is the amount of variation between houses - and we didn't even realise at the time.

Re: Housey parodies of pop songs, etc

Praise the Lord for our Foundation. Praise him for our Kestos bra; all done up with pink elastic .................................. A note of explanation In the late 50's early 60's all underwear was provided by the school, including bras. The famous Kestos bra (bear with me chaps!) did not have a c...

Re: Servants Bells

Am I going crazy or do I correctly remember "speaking tubes" in Wards? I think that they went between the first and second floor landings and just outside the Wardmistress' room on the ground floor. I even have a vague recollection of pouring water into one in the vague hope that it would ...

Re: table manners

Our brush and comb bags were definitely calico in 3's. I never realised, at the time, that there were so many small differences between houses.
