Re: Resignation of Baker and emergency appointment of Hansford
The girls that came to Horsham for the Quatercentenary were shown round by, I suppose selected, Grecians. The buzz was that, on passing the pillar box outside the Common Room, one of the girls asked 'Are you allowed to post things in that?' St Matthew's Day was the girls' only other manifestation f...

Re: Resignation of Baker and emergency appointment of Hansford
That there was a girls' CH at Hertford must have been known to everyone at Horsham apart from maybe new boys in their first few weeks. There were also quite a few sibling pairs divided between the two schools. There were official exchange visits by senior pupils on each other's Speech Days, and both...

Re: Corporal Punishment by CH Teaching staff
Corporal punishment at CH was a form of sexual gratification and had very little to do with chastisement. It was a prime source of aggressive sexual satisfaction and it is directly linked to the culture of sexual abuse that occurred and the issues with the school not just in my time but for some 32...

Re: Corporal Punishment by CH Teaching staff
Definitely not the same 'Hewitt'. R. Hewitt's subject was English, both Lit. and Lang. I believed he played rugby for The Harlequins. As far as I'm aware, he wasn't at CH for any great length of time If he is the person I am thinking of, then he also tried to teach some of us Russian. After "A...

Re: Hammer blows to CH finances
Michael, I would hope that you would approve of one more exemption from VAT, sanitary products. It’s a disgrace there should be VAT on such essential items for women. I live in a country which (like almost all others) imposes VAT on all sorts of obvious essentials, including food, water, books and ...

Re: Hammer blows to CH finances
Michael, I take your point about a school not being a 'business.' However, that argument is weakened by the growing number of people (some in very elevated positions) who make remarks like 'don't forget a school is a business'. Indeed, that argument is being increasingly used to re-label headmaster...

Re: Resignation of Baker and emergency appointment of Hansford
How sure are you that he didn't write a reference for Baker? Your post doesn't explicitly say that he didn't. I've not the slightest idea whether he wrote one or not. The article in The Leysian suggests (more than suggests, actually) that Barker had strong reservations about Baker, in particular th...

Re: Hammer blows to CH finances
So about half a million. Not insignificant, but not a great deal in the broader scheme of things (about 2% of total expenditure, unless I have overlooked something). However, the report makes the point that VAT is not charged on fees because the foundation is not a 'business'. This is the crucial po...

Re: Resignation of Baker and emergency appointment of Hansford
That tribute, while praising him as a teacher, also hints at why he should not have been given a job with headmasterly responsibilities. I also knew Alan Barker, the headmaster of The Leys mentioned here. While very reactionary, he was a man of integrity and good sense. The CH Council presumably did...

Re: Hammer blows to CH finances
Someone who charges VAT can also reclaim VAT. I don't know how much VAT CH pays (most of its expenditure is presumably on non-VATable items such as salaries).

Re: A letter from the CHOBA board
Yes, if we could agree what it was. But we can't, except in a very few open-and-shut cases.
Law, while subject to continuous development, has the advantage of being objective at any given time (and *reasonably* certain).

Re: Vegetarians
Two thoughts for vegetarians: 1. If you are vegetarian but not vegan, what should be done with male animals? 2. If you are vegan, what is your motive, bearing in mind that growing vegetable foodstuffs results in far more animal deaths than livestock farming? (Mainly insects and slugs, but also pigeo...
