"particularly as regards health" How did the abolition of Chapel caps affect our HEALTH ? Glad somebody else picked that up - I did wonder myself how it affected your health! I meant to add a comment but forgot! Well, the abolition of hats did improve my psychological health somewhat, sin...

Re: Quick questions and (maybe) answers Hertford Memories thread

I seem to remember Miss Morrison sitting in the seat in front of DR. Kerren, would you know if DR was high church? I presume Mary Thompson was Roman Catholic. Certainly the Rev. Walkers home church, St john the Baptist at Great amwell was very "belly and smelly". I think the senior mistre...

[quote="Fjgrogan"] we were never allowed to set foot outside outside the school gates (or of course in chapel - St Paul strikes again!) without donning these incredibly unattractive garments - /quote] But then there came a day quite late in my time when a message came round that henceforwa...

She definitely didn't. I didn't look further than university. As for what you might do if you didn't go, I only recall teaching, nursing or secretarial work as possible destinations.

Re: Quick questions and (maybe) answers Hertford Memories thread

And there was a small notebook, like the ones we had for vocab, in which we were supposed to keep our accounts. I remember going over them once a week with Lil. Once we were allowed to go shopping it became quite hard to make them convincing - and of course I always found it hard to make them add up...

I'm sure I remember it being 2 BAs - and we were allowed our purses once a month. Mons definitely on their own and I can't remember how often we were allowed our purses in principle. But I bet in other houses mons at least kept their own purses.....

I recognise this - just how I felt at Oxford, and from time to time since. A sense of not quite belonging anywhere.....

Re: Quick questions and (maybe) answers Hertford Memories thread

In our time the railway walk used to crop up regularly, when there was a need for everyone to get some exercise with minimum effort and supervision. The route went (surprise) up one side of the line out of Hertford East, crossed it somewhere or other, and came back the other side. Can't remember how...
