Clive Perdue, RIP

The CHA email newsletter for August reports the death near Paris in March of Clive Perdue, BB 1956-63. We probably all have very good friends with whom we completely lose touch, and in my case, Clive was one. We were fellow Modern Language Grecians, fellow back-stagers at the Dramatic Society, fello...

Re: CCF STORIES/INSPECTIONS/CAMPS

R.S.M. (Squeaky) Cooke. Quite a character. Anyone emember him ? A raconteur of war stories. I remember him well. One of his best lines (though I never heard it myself, never having been to camp) was, when issuing the daily ration of three sheets of loo paper, was: "One up, one down, and one to...

Re: underwear

I should add that we were also provided with pyjamas that were stripped and had a tie up in the front. Thses made us look like convicts... They were indeed sometimes stripped, but don't you mean striped? (Actually pretty well every male wore pyjamas like that in those days. They were probably the m...

Re: Any Senior Grecians or School Monitors out there

The School Monitors in my day (1984) got some money called Q Shott: As SG I got something like £7 a term. can anyone explain where Q Shott name comes from and of course if there is still a financial advantage in being a school monitor? My money went on beers at the club!! If you got 7 pounds, the ...

Re: Any Senior Grecians or School Monitors out there

There were six new boys in ThB in 1955, and in 1962/63 four of them were school monitors. (Is this a record?) One was SG (from a base in ThA), one was house captain of Lamb B, one was house captain of ThB, and I was a supernumerary school monitor, a truly splendid position, as it involved no respons...

Re: Whole School Photo from ?1995

There was one on display in most houses in the mid-50s and dating from about 1950 I think. Famous for having someone (I mean the same someone) on it at both ends. (Are they still taken with a rotating camera, or just a wide-angle?) There were certainly none taken in the whole of my time.

Re: What Sounds & Smells Instantly Transport You Back to CH?

Actually I quite liked Marmite Fritters, which is more than I can say about CH roast meat or roast potatoes, or porridge, or fried bread, or "toast". (One house -- Th.A. I think -- was "off toast" for a month because one of its monitors had the temerity to take a piece of slightl...

Re: What Sounds & Smells Instantly Transport You Back to CH?

I don't think I've ever been revisited by a CH taste. They were thankfully unique. (Was there ever anything like CH roast mutton (apart from old boot leather?)). But another smell occurs to me: I once picked up a whiff that took me straight back to Friday afternoons (CCF day). It was probably trigge...

The Dining Hall. I have only ever had a similar whiff once since -- in a holiday flat somewhere. It was quite unique. It may have changed since the formica came. And the Tube in winter -- sweaty games clothes drying. And Pat Cullen's pipe.

On Wiki, did anyone else see the Alex cartoon in the Telegraph on 4 June? If not, go to http://www.telegraph.co.uk and click on Alex cartoon in the top right-hand corner, then keep clicking "Previous Alex" till you come to it.

Re: Boarding school changes over the years

I'm not in favour of harsh discipline, still less of arbitrary discipline. But I am in favour of fairly Spartan conditions for adolescents. That doesn't imply poor hygiene, though, and my designer-regime would include more than one change of underwear a week, and exclude mid-morning PT with no time ...

Re: House shirt colours

From 10 years prior to MidA 15: not much changed between my time and his. There had been a change in about 1950, and there was another in about 1961, but the patterns were affected more than the colours. My Thorn B shirt was purple and white stripes, but it changed to hoops before I left, and I reme...

Re: Was CH Horsham Designed to Be Gay?

When I was at CH, and that was half a century ago, the toilets that we actually used had doors. True, they had no locks, but there were recognized ways of indicating they were occupied (e.g. putting your coat over the door) and this was universally respected. This whole thing is a complete red herri...

Re: Was CH Horsham Designed to Be Gay?

The design of the facilities is totally irrelevant. Entirely agree. Maybe the thread should be renamed "Red Herring", although I am sure there are many other competing threads. I too agree, i have read this thread and have tried not to comment. I think we need to remember the difference i...
