Re: teaching relevance in later life

That's terrible Keith that a series of loud bangs should have screwed up your hearing. I can't imagine why someone should have been exposed to bangs like this. Are you still able to listen to music? My own experience, on a more pop level, involved getting tinnitus from going to too many rock concert...

Re: Punishment system

We never had yellow cards and red cards in my day (1950s). What for? Two-footed tackles? Abusing the ref? Last defender taking out the striker?

Re: Bring back proper rugby

Returning to the vexed subject of watchable rugby, I signed in to the Harlequins site to find a veritable plethora (I think that's what you call it) of posts from frustrated rugby fans (not the sexual sort) who are thoroughly fed up with not being able to understand today's game. I mentioned ages ag...

Re: My experience of visiting CH after the abuse

It's times like this that I get very irate about Christ's Hospital and some of the attitudes - especially on the Official site (from which I've been banned) which casts CH as smelling totally of roses. No-one should have to apologise for not accepting the "character building" which the Bri...

Re: teaching relevance in later life

I never got to teaching but realised early in life that words were my thing rather than numbers. I was told by Gad at about age 14 that I could write but STEM subjects were, I'm afraid, a mystery to me. I used to get derisory marks in these subjects. The trouble was that it seemed to me that you hav...

Re: Girlie Magazines, Pin Ups and Other Such Things

This takes me back a bit. Back to the 50s. Overlooking top table in Col B was a faded sepia photo of an ex-Col B housemaster called Lenny Dale. AH Buck (before he got kicked out for gropery) made much of old Lenny's reputation. He told us that Lenny would not give you your weekly pocket money unless...

Re: any jobs going?!

I was only joking David when I mentioned your "struggles" on the Idwal Slabs ("Hope" or Tennis Shoe Climb"?) I only know these climbs by reputation. And my own experience of Southern sandstone is at Harrisons and High Rocks where I found the popular routes to be shiny and bl...

Re: any jobs going?!

By the way. As I logged on I noticed an ad for rock climbing shoes - particularly the sort of contorted, ballet style shoes that today's extreme climbers wear and which you have to take off at every stance between pitches because they're crucifying your feet. Why has this cropped up on the CH forum?...

Re: any jobs going?!

In my day (1950s and 60s) the Benevolent Society of Blues might have found her a a job. What happened to them? Not so benevolent perhaps these days.

Re: Freaky in the FT

He's done it yet again! Another letter in the FT (Weekend edition 22/23 October). I'm ploughing what is by now a familiar furrow because this is my third letter in the FT on this particular subject. Is an independent central bank any more effective in softening the economic cycle than one controlled...

Re: David Newsome

Thinking back on past posts, was this the same Newsome who, I'm told, went apesh*t when Roy Hattersley declared his intention to close down the private schools, and he gathered the school together to tell them not to vote Labour at the election?

Re: Freaky returns to Sussex (by the sea)

I've posted elsewhere about how our housemaster in the 50s called the recently pubescent pupils in to his study to warn us about homosexual liaisons, it being illegal at the time. I remember how many fancied other housemates but were all paranoid about turning out gay - which then could be the kiss ...

I seem to remember that John was finding things a bit of a struggle in recent months. Perhaps his wife or family might like to give the site a call and update us. All good wishes anyway John.

Freaky returns to Sussex (by the sea)

After much pressure from family who seem to think I may be about to keel over and need looking after, I've cashed in my chips and moved nearby, opting for a rather decent retirement complex in Saltdean, five miles east of Brighton. The vibe here is lovely. Everyone's friendly and relaxed. It's a bit...
