Re: Charitable status of independent schools
Amy, You say " These charities have to demonstrate they are providing i believe a substantial benefit to the public....which is why the recent news about Eton increasing the numbers of scholarships/means tested fees places are shooting up-because otherwise are they providing a public benefit.&q...

BAND AT MENIN GATE
According to the programme, the Housie band was supposed to have played at the Menin Gate in Ypres on Monday 6th October and visited various cemeteries on the Tuesday. There has not been a single report on this, not even on the school web-site. Does anyone know if it actually took place and if so ho...

Re: School Chaplains
At OU summer school one year we had a lecture on the selection and appointment of clergy in the Church of England. It proved to be so complicated and with so many provisos and "ifs-and-buts" that we eventually persuaded the lecturer that he was as confused as we were. The Roman Catholic sy...

Re: School Chaplains
I have nothing against Bishop Urwin, I was only expressing surprise that there was a Bishop of Horsham, a post I had never heard of before. As I recall, in the late 40s/early 50s CH Horsham came direct under the Bishop of Chichester, a Bishop Bell, I believe. Glad to see he is going (translating?) t...

Re: School Chaplains
I am interested to learn that Horsham has its own bishop, which must, I am sure, be of recent creation. The present incumbent is The Right Reverend Lindsay Goodall Urwin OGS, who is an Australian by birth.

GRECIAN DEMO?
A fellow Old Blue recently told me that when Peter Southern was newly in post at CH he introduced some changes that sparked a demonstration by Grecians, who camped out on his lawn in protest. I have no reason to doubt my informant, but he cannot recall the details, so, does anyone remember this and,...

Re: Is this fair?
Mrs C says: "Grecians are told that they will not receive their Bible etc at the Leavers Service if they owe money to the school. Nevertheless, some still slip through the net and leave owing varying amounts. They can hardly be singled out can they?" I would appreciate a little elaboration...

Re: Whole Holiday
I remember the whole holidays as being great events. As I recall it you had to tell the housemaster where you were going and that was about it. One year went boating at Amberley, but best was a day at Royal Naval Air Station Ford, where three of us were shown around the place and taken for a one hou...

Great Plum,
You say: "...they are spending too much of their money, building random walls on the back ash..."
I am curious. Can you elaborate, please? Where are these walls, and they must surely have some purpose (or, at least, I hope they do)?

Peter,
FYI, I am now up and running on the Great War Forum, but it was real hard work getting there and required the personal intervention of someone known as "The Administrator"!

Re: WW1 Roll of Honour
Peter, I found the Great War Forum. Absolutely not your faul, but I wrestled with it for about three hours last night trying to register, obtain password, etc, etc. At every turn I received error messages and when I occasionally solved one a new one appeared. Life is just too short for that sort of ...
