Re: Reading to the dormitory
I think I can assure Keibat that Shagging about covered it for the working classes and many of the middle. Much like today in fact. Now, only when I submit this entry will I find out whether the designers of this site have starred it out.

Re: Reading to the dormitory
Michael, as Keibat says, I do think you're in danger of shooting the messenger in order to kill the message. In the thirties - that low, dishonest decade (as I think Auden? described it) - both capitalism and democracy seemed to have collapsed and some otherwise intelligent people joined extreme mov...

Re: Reading to the dormitory
As I remember, the two Joneses in Prep A were always known as Jonah Senior and Jonah Junior (although neither eaten by whales). As to Lady Chatterley, Michael, I've always believed that the jury in that trial correctly saw that this was a book about class rather than sex. Clifford Chatterley is the ...

Re: Tom Lawson: the interview
To be heretical, I'm amazed that anyone learns anything* at a co-ed school. Pretty boys were time-wasting enough, but (a) such liaisons were, shall we say, dangéreuses, and (b) they weren't in the same classroom. *what you do learn, of course, is how to relate to the opposite sex, which many of us ...

Re: Tom Lawson: the interview
Full marks to him for having turned down politics or journalism after having got a PPE degree at Oxford. Oxford's PPE (Politics, Philosophy and Economics) is so useless as to be positively lethal. Look at who got one. David Cameron got a double first in the Economics bit and Nigel Lawson also passed...

Re: Reading to the dormitory
I remember The Cruel Sea, which John Page approved of because it was the 'Cadet' edition. As soon as he had gone, the non-cadet edition was substituted, which contained some pretty juicy passages. On another occasion, we chose Duncan Webb's memoirs. Duncan Webb was a crime reporter on the 'People' ...

Re: HOUSEY SLANG
Elsewhere on the site some of the girls have said they resented their punishments at Hertford - in some cases being condemned to be silent for ten minutes: a draconian punishment for a woman. I haven't got time to trawl this forum for reports of punishments at Hertford but I do think your last phra...

Re: HOUSEY SLANG
There was a programme on television on corporal punishment last night John. Strangely they neglected to mention our old housemaster. And they only touched briefly on the sado-masochistic side of things. Le Vice Anglais was always thought to be the result of young upper class people being sent to sin...

Re: HOUSEY SLANG
Yes, I'm of your vintage Keith. Crug and Flab. Although when I went up into the senior school I got haughtily told off for calling it Crug. It was apparently Bread in the Upper. How typical of the English boarding school. Thus do those above us seek to put us down with sneering pedantic corrections....

Re: Date of sentencing of Webb and Burr
Painters of yore seem to have been a bit more worldly and earthy. Hylas is positively restrained in comparison with Bronzino' s 'Allegory of Cupid and Venus' in the National and dating from the sixteenth century; a positive paean to heavy petting between what appears to be a fourteen year old Cupid ...

Re: Date of sentencing of Webb and Burr
Now that the Harvey Weinstein revelations have come tumbling out it may be that people, and witnesses, will be encouraged to shout at the time, rather than bottle it up and complain later. This is precisely what the #MeToo movement is trying to encourage. I have three daughters and they tell me that...

Re: Date of sentencing of Webb and Burr
It may be that today's greater readiness to come forward and complain (and be believed) will aid prosecutions. I can see what MS is saying in that the longer these things disappear into the mists of time the harder it is to get at the facts.

Re: Date of sentencing of Webb and Burr
Last night's ITV documentary by Alex Renton showed up the reluctance of the boarding school authorities and bodies like the Independent Schools Couuncil to allow these scandals to spread too widely. Offenders were allowed to quietly leave and in some cases were still given references for jobs at oth...

Re: Politics
Yo! Our splinter group Sisters Uncut have just invaded the red carpet at the BAFTAs and held the proceedings up for a while, just as they did at the premiere of Suffragette. So the posh, smooth, privately educated La Lumley had to put her silly speech on hold for a while.

That sounds a bit cryptic John. Hope things aren't going to be too bad.
