Re: CH station : Closure Guildford line

No steam in my day, I was there when the train crash occurred and the loco was definately a diesel.

Re: WHOLE HOLIDAY

I could be wrong but wasn't the Thursday whole holiday later swopped for a long week end? I do remember getting into hot water with the Lady Superintendant because the bread cutting crew of which I was a member cut bread as usual one morning and were then told it should have been left until the foll...

Re: CH station : Closure Guildford line

I didn't get to travel on that line, but found a rather splendid copper train lamp in the council dump behind the station on the Slinfold line. It was mainly an excellent source of old bicycles! I cannot recall when the Brighton line closed, but just before it did, Pongo Littlefield allowed me to jo...

Re: WHOLE HOLIDAY

In the early sixties, I seem to recall we were almost forced to visit the delights of Climping beach near Littlehampton by coach. But later on I managed to get to spend my whole holidays sailing my boat in Chichester harbour. I've still got the boat although she hasn't seen the water for a few years...

Re: Strange old man dressed in WW1 army gear / dog named lob

Pongo Littlefield with just the one blue suit all term and his nervous habit of giving a twitch of the gavel block in dining hall before banging the gavel for grace. Story goes that some wag had at some time attached a pile of gun caps to the base with explosive results!!

Re: Fascinating documentary footage of 1930s CH

PE must have stopped in 62. I remember watching it whilst in Prep in 61-2 but when I moved to Barnes in 63 it had ceased.

Re: Fascinating documentary footage of 1930s CH

I also do not remember many overweight pupils in the years 61-69. But we didn't starve either! Much of the food was good although I do even now remember with some loathing the disgusting porridge every day for breakfast that set solid in the bowls. We got got cornflakes instead on Weds and Sundays. ...

Re: Roger Martin

Well remember Roger Martin's Austin J4 or JU250 type caravannette WAM 115. On one occasion he took a party of us to see the London to Brighton Veteran car run. By turning the engine off whilst on the move, coasting a few yards, then turning the engine back on again, he managed to produce spectacular...

Re: Strange old man dressed in WW1 army gear / dog named lob

I remember those beehives well if only for the number of times I was stung, But Bill's mead was memorable! He was always very welcoming and many happy hours were spent whilst maintaining the livestock. One other odd memory was borrowing his two wheeled radio trolley (it only had two wheels at the ce...

Re: French teacher

Referring to Bob Hailey a few posts above. I recently attended a U3A presentation given by him on the history of Christ's Hospital. Interesting to hear it from a Teachers perpective rather than mine as a pupil. He certainly kept the audience amused!

Re: Strange old man dressed in WW1 army gear / dog named lob

Agreed: I learnt nothing from Nell , Art wise, but the uncontrolled chaos of the lessons made a great break from the tedium of other school work. Most art lessons descended into pitched battles with the other class over the screen divider. Having just spent three weeks enjoying glorious sunsets at C...

Re: Strange old man dressed in WW1 army gear / dog named lob

Nell Todd is my most vivid memory. Art classes to the sound of Chickens clucking in the pen under the model theatre and the sight of dead pheasants strung up in the pottery room . Also her famous speech day hats constructed from papier mache, one of which melted in the rain! Bill Kirby who was retir...
