Re: Block Mottoes

Thank you for that link Michael. I have just spent a nostalgic half hour or so browsing through that thread. It made me very aware of how much I miss Kerren's input on all things Hertford-historical!

Re: School for Scoundrels

Thank you - I feel vindicated! I was so sure - even if the rest of the film was perhaps Yeovil. Also it seemed reasonable since the credits showed it as filmed in Elstree. Maybe I am no yet verging on senility after all! I wouldn't know where to look online anyway!

Re: School for Scoundrels

I've been informed that it is Yeovil, but I still have my doubts!

School for Scoundrels

I am just watching the old film School for Scoundrels which was broadcast on BBC2 last weekend, expires on iplayer at 0739 tomorrow and is unfortunately not downloadable (too old, I guess). I feel sure that in the first minute and a half the scene is Hertford East station with the back gate to the s...

Re: I want a coatfrock!

....... and I managed to keep my girls in school tunics, skirts, trousers, summer dresses, but not myself because I was never a standard size! I also made my own wedding dress, just to prove that I could. I still have it and most of it is not bad, but I did the hem in a hurry and made a dreadful mes...

Re: I want a coatfrock!

Katharine - with a month to spare, and all those years of CH needlework behind you, I know you have the skills to produce a replica!

Re: Bed-Wetting

Children already known to be bedwetters were specifically barred from admission to CH. I don't know what happened if the trauma of admission triggered the first occurrence!

Bill Purefoy?

I have just watched on iplayer all four episodes of David Starkey's Music and Monarchy. I notice that the credits for episodes two and three include under 'music performed by' the name of William Purefoy. Could this be the young man who was at CH in the late 1980s? I remember the unusual name and th...

Re: IB Congratulations

Perhaps you could Google it, John. I am told that is how to find out anything these days!! I might ge around to trying it myself some time soon - personally I still prefer books! I wonder if there is a term for the internet equivalent of a Luddite?!

Re: The Making of Them by Nick Duffel

Katharine - if we had had a different housemistress I would probably have been perfectly happy at Hertford. To this day I still blame that woman personally for destroying my self-confidence; unfortunately I have since heard from several other members of staff that they felt obliged to agree with her...

Re: The Making of Them by Nick Duffel

Angela - did all seven of you love it? Perhaps your parents had a better understanding of things than mine did. In any dispute my parents would always side with the school against me; I think they were very conscious of how lucky we were to get all that 'charitable benevolence' and keen not to offen...

Re: The Making of Them by Nick Duffel

I agree with most of what Jo says - some of what went on at Hertford in the 1950s would today be regarded as psychological abuse and in some cases had long term effects. Fortunately this eased up with several changes of headmistress, and certainly the atmosphere was very different by the time of the...

Well done, Keith. It shames me to realise that you and I are of a similar age and I am struggling to get to the local bus stop. Must be something to do with all that fresh Finnish air over the years!

Re: Eddie Goncalves (Gonk)

Good news today. Eddie has got his house back. The bailliffs went in today accompanied by a dog (because the tenants had a Staffie), a locksmith, and a gardener, only to find that the tenants had 'done a runner'. The house now needs to be deep cleaned, and the garden completely dug up and resurfaced...
