Re: Automotive Anecdotes
Are we talking about the same car of Buck's? The one I remember couldn't have held 6 people packed with sardine-tin efficiency, let alone 14.

Re: Was CH Horsham Designed to Be Gay?
I said it further up this thread, and I'll say it again: put adolescent boys together and exclude them from contact with girls, and they'll have sex with each other (or many of them will). This is not "gay" sex, which implies preferring boys to girls. I know plenty of OBs of my generation ...

Automotive Anecdotes
Some memories of CH cars/drivers. 1. A tiny 1930s Austin (we're talking about 1956) driven by Hector Buck of dubious memory, which included his initials AHB in the numberplate (in those days a bit of fun rather than a silly affectation). He was arrested, or certainly stopped, for drunk-driving it (b...

Re: What price a Leaver's Bible?
eBay has a policy of not displaying things it would be illegal to sell elsewhere. Sometimes these are pretty universal (narcotics, human organs), sometimes they are country specific, in Germany for example Nazi memorabilia. eBay seems to have an automatic program to recognize these, but concedes tha...

Re: What price a Leaver's Bible?
I also sent the vendor of the postcard a message and he's now amended his description. The pic must date from before 1921, when the War Memorial (including the lawns in front of the Dining Hall) was created. He's probably right to date it c. 1905.

Re: What price a Leaver's Bible?
I have, and am waiting for an answer. The first answer was to ask me to give more info, so I sent the link at the head of this thread.J.R. wrote:Why doesn't a regular e-bay user contact them direct and ask them why it is blocked in Germany ?
I don't use e-bay, but might glance at it once in a while.

Re: What price a Leaver's Bible?
Talking of Bibles, George Bell the Bishop of Chichester was presented with a Leaver's Bible on his retirement, a nice gesture. Does anyone know of any other honorary presentations? (Incidentally mine (1963) and my brother's (1965) are both Revised Versions.) I'm still trying to find out why eBay Ger...

Re: What price a Leaver's Bible?
For some mysterious reason, a closer look at this ebay item is blocked to German internet addresses. Can anyone tell me why? (The usual reason is that there's a swastika around somewhere, public displays of swastikas being forbidden in Germany.) (I notice it has no bidders, so the price is theoretic...

Re: New houseparents' accommodation on the back avenue
I said I'd stay out of this from now on, but... oh well. englishangel's points have been answered elsewhere, I think. Sure they can have decent accommodation, but it doesn't have to be mixed up with the pupils'. Now I shall be an old fogey (aka historian). "In my day" Thornton and Coleridg...

Re: Sex 'n' Drugs 'n' Rock'n'Roll Part 1: Substance Abuse
I find these recollections of Newsome as headmaster interesting. I knew him because he was my Senior Tutor at Cambridge (in which capacity he fined Tim Yeo 50 pounds -- multiply by about 15 for present-day values -- for having a girl in his room overnight ("I could always send you down..."...

Re: New houseparents' accommodation on the back avenue
This I think is my last word on this topic: boarding schools are not family-friendly places. They weren't in the 50s, and to judge by Mrs C's comments, they aren't now. They weren't meant to be. In fact, I would go as far as to say that this is part of their essence and purpose. When I discuss (and ...

Re: First Day.....Last Day
Sydney "Lord of the Dance" Carter is said to have taken his Grecian's coat. If it was his best, it was quite a theft. (If it was his everyday one, it was hardly worth taking, I imagine. Frayed cuffs were/are quite a problem.)

That I suppose is "being bribed to leave".

Re: New houseparents' accommodation on the back avenue
I mentioned somewhere above that I thought there ought to be a staff estate beyond Big Side or somewhere. Of course a houseparent has to have a place to be on duty day and night in the house, but that doesn't mean his/her family have to live there. I suppose a house has more than one houseparent, so...
