CALLING ALL MUSICIANS - FOR THE CAROL CONCERT

Post by kerrensimmonds »

I have just returned from meeting with Adrian Bawtree to put flesh on the programme for 13 December.
I don't know if the lists on the CHA website are up to date (I hope not!!) but we do definitely need :-
a) More brass players (see below)
b) More singers (especially Altos)
c) A LARGE audience, for whom there will be much to sing, and which you will do lustily and enthusiastically! (Believe me....). And the mulled wine and mince pies and the fellowship afterward the Concert will put the seal on your enjoyment of the occasion.

Please pass the word round to your friends who do not belong to the Forum.

So PLEASE get in touch with Zoe to indicate your attendance and your interest.

i) Re Brass - yes, this year Adrian thinks we WILL limit it to brass instruments, played by OBs who are 'still playing' (at however 'low' a level.....) (sorry Eloise). Next year we may well come through with a different programme and open it up to a wider range of instruments - but for now it is just brass, to supplement the organ at St. Sepulchre's (which is believed to be not terribly special)

ii) Re choral singers - just to whet your appetite, you will be singing a number of rollicking congregational carols - OK - yes - including 'Eastern Monarchs...' (beloved of Horsham Old Blues but I suspect unknown to Hertford Old Blues....but it is a very singable tune...).The two choir items will be 'For Unto Us.....' from Handel's 'Messiah' and 'Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day' (Gardiner). Music will be sent (if required) to choral singers beforehand, so that they can prepare themselves.

iii) There will be a definite and clearly defined moment for children, so Old Blues should not feel inhibited about bringing their children aged 0-15 or more!

Choir/instrumental practice will be at 4.30, for a 6.00 Carol Concert kick off.

Through this Forum I will be very happy to answer questions about the programme. Questions and/or bookings re attendance/singing in the choir /playing in the brass ensemble should be addressed to Zoe Mitchell, the CHA Manager. (Addition by JT:- Zoe can be reach via the CHA website)

Ooh, Eastern Monarchs - my favourite! We sung it last Christmas at my church - the organist commented that I might know it...

I have sent emails to all my OB friends to try and drum up some support...

I can probably stretch to a trumpet part. Will have to unseize those valves though.

Hey,

Also could probably stretch to grab the trumpet out - am playing in a musical over Xmas so lip should be back. Let me know what etc etc how many brass there are etc? I could get Sam Edgington to come but I think he has a gig that night. Also might be able to get my friend Freya McInroy to come and sing.

Let me know,

Amanda.. you get in there! We need more brass... I was only saying so to Adrian last night.
Can I put you in the programme (being finalised this weekend?

There is a bit of a trumpet/trombone imbalance... and trombonists out there wanting to have an enjoyable evening on 13 December?

Hello.. great!
I think there are four trumpets and certainly one maybe two trombones.
Freya should sign up with Zoe - who will then give her the list of music so that if she wants anything to practice from beforehand, I can send her a copy of it. Zoe should also confirm the dress code - have I put that on the Forum? Black top, black bottom, christmassy-coloured something (red, green, whatever....) - scarf, tie, shawl, bow tie, waistcoat.... - to adorn the top.
Looking forward to seeing you

PS
I should have said that Zoe has access to some tickets purchased by an Old Blue, to be given to impoverished students so that they do not have to pay for themselves.

I have so many things coming up before that I cannot really start to get excited yet.

Well I hope that Mary will be 'really' excited by 13 December.. and Richard what about your 'lip' or 'embouchure' (whatever its called for Trombonists). Are you going to scrape off the rust and come and join the Brass Ensemble?
