Google Ads at the bottom of the page?

Post by jtaylor »

As part of trying to help fund the forum, I'm going to try adding Google Ads to the bottom of the page, and see what revenue it generates.

This is a simple thing to undo, and doesn't cost anything to try - so bear with me whilst I trial it on the site.

Whilst we all hate ads on websites, if they're unobtrusive, and may generate a little income, it's gotta be worth a try?

If the feedback is really bad about it, and the income isn't worth, then it'll be really easy to undo - so do give your feedback in this topic...

There are rules about not pushing people to click on ads purely to generate revenue, so we wouldn't ever encourage people to click through as this would not be within the spirit of the scheme.....

The payments are usually click-through based, but can also be based on page displays of the ads too...

I think we should try it and see. If it's too obtrusive or not raising enough revenue then we can think again. As a general rule, I hate having to wade through adverts to get to the main 'meat' (magazines, village newsletters etc.) but if we can get something out of it then I think we should give it a go. Do we need to rethink the general issue of funding anyway? Are donations still coming through? JT mustn't be out of pocket for doing this.

I've just implemented this.
The tailoring of the ads seems pretty good - the ads I've just seen cover bullying support training, log-built classrooms(!) and a Horsham Accountancy....let's see if they remain targetted.

I've put the banner at the top of the index and forum topic list views, but NOT on the individual topics - on the principle that that shouldn't iritate too much.

Give me your views here - it's really to remove the ads.

I didn't even notice them, I had to go back and look.

Hurricane relief, Kumon maths and a couple of others were what I saw.

See, even when checking they didn't make much of an impression.

I noticed them, but they didnt bother me - so if they bring in some extra cash - all the better !
Let us know, JT, whether revenue is generated by presence or by clicking

I also missed them but just went back and explored who is advertising and what. Looks well focussed. Can I suggest that from time to time you post along the lines of the "quote" above (which is, admittedly a merger of two of your posts). This will remind people, but you will clearly be stating that you are not pushing people to click on the adverts so honour is satisfied.

In fact this had an interesting result - one of the adverts is for an "asperges" school and it so happens a friend is a long time specialist teacher of asperges children. She is fed up with her local authority employers and might be interested in a new employer! Not quite what was intended but for her worth the clicks. On her behalf, "Ta muchly".

Yes, you're right. Thought that they wouldn't be too irritating, and we do need a chance that they're actually clicked on by users....
