We wore our gymslips all winter and had them for years, once we stopped growing, then they were handed down to the next generation.

If I remember correctly, we handed our everyday coat in for a new one at the end of each school year, which then became the best coat for the following year. The previous best coat became next year's everyday coat and so on. Housey coats are very forgiving to growing teenagers; I don't remember having problems outgrowing coats during the school year and rips and tears were simply mended by matron.

We girls at Horsham obviously had a different uniform for 'best', but I only remember having one housey coat. I think it was fitted on my UF (did we have them for the first winter after we moved?) and I think that was the only one I had for the whole of my school career.

er .... not quite. Since he began as a New Dep last year, Jonathan has always had two coats one of which is "best". Is this because he is in the choir? He is wearing his best today, which is a pity as it doesn't fit him very well!Great Plum wrote:These days they only have one housey coat iirc...

It may well be that he's in choir but I remember talking to a matron who said that most only have one coat - maybe choir and band is different...DavebytheSea wrote:er .... not quite. Fortunately I did, unless it was just a spare I found in the spare coat room:Richard Ruck wrote:I certainly didn't - too expensive, I would imagine, what with the velvet and the extra pocket......soc wrote:Did button grecians have two coats?
