Where does the word "Toyce" come from?

Great Plum used the word "Toyce" on a thread and I was wondering where the word comes from
I searched the web with no results except when used as a first name
In senior house we started with a "Table toyce" which was a collection of shelves on a table where you arranged your books for homework and stuff
Later you moved onto a "Toyce" which was what would now be called a workstation - they were ranged down each side of the dayroom in senior houses.
(You only had one until you moved into your study)

I don't know where the word came from but no one outside of CH has ever heard of it...
we had them in Maine B down the sides of the dayroom for the LE!

knowing CH they'd pobably ask for lots of money...?

Full fees are about the same as Eton and you only need to earn as a couple a turnover (not profit) of £40K to have to pay full fees - so with 3 kids and a turnover of around 40K you can't afford the fees! You need to be seriously rich or dirt poor to send kids there now. In my opinion.

Well I was poor as a church mouse myself arriving at CH as an orphan so my one with no legs was just fine
I don't know whether you get one if you pay full fees now, and I doubt it
It's more like a posh hotel now, full of pretty girls and CARPETS!!!

they havent had desks in day rooms for years, they certainly werent there when i was there in 2000-02

on the LE in Col B you were allowed to pin a string across between your toyce and the one behind and hang something over it for that privacy...

I think Wallace spelled his Barnes as in Barnes A rather than as in the nearby Green.
