When did "Pongo" Littlefield finish then?

I think he was housemaster of Barnes A the year before I joined (1972) so I guess he must have retired at the end of that year's summer term.

"Killer" Fry

I think that he took over from Pongo about 72-73, although for a while I think that they may have shared the job..?? :?:

As I recall it was "Killer" Fry and "Bogey" Fryer.

Not too sure where "Killer" came from but I could take an educated guess at the other one

And yes, I believe that "Pongo" Littlefield did retire at the end of the summer term in 1972.

Come to think of it (and I know its not on topic, but what the heck), there seemed to be rather a lot of nicknames in the 70s:-

"Rocker" Rae
"Dolly" O'Meara
"Bomber" Nicholson
"Toad" or "Grolly" Newsome
"Ubi" Atkinson
"Kit" Aitken
"Gomby" Shaw - one year teaching post in LHA

Ken Grimshaw was - as I recall - interestingly named.

Anyone got any more ? And what was the origin of some of these names ?

Just thought of "Pinky" Palmer and "Ping" Vincent-Smith.

And I seem to remember Peter Higgins had some strange nickname. "Chicken" rings a bell.

And I am hallucinating in remembering "Rip" Kirby.

"Nog" Lorimer

"Des" Carrington (after the disc jockey)

Don't think Mr Tod's nickname is suitable for publicising on the forum but those that know will know!!

"Bronco" Lane (after a character in Laramie)

"Pop" Beaven

"Rat" James

OK, as richardb has now contribted to this thread it's time forme to confess before he spills the beans anyway . . .

We ran a porn mag library from our study during the Lent Term of our final year. It was very simple, we acquired the goods (often gifted to us by others who didn't want to get caught with them) stored them and then made a modest charge for a 24hr rental. It kept us in booze at the Grecians Club all term. By the end of the term the business was getting too big so we sold it to a younger boy who subsequently was caught with the goods in the first week of the following term. When Ron Lorimer said that it had been suggested that they might have come from me he was relieved when I denied any knowledge. After all he wouldn't have expected anything like that from a house monitor would he ?

I feel so guilty now !

An outrageous allegation. It couldn't possibly be true. Well, maybe ...

Another couple that occurred to me:

"Mongy" Torkington
"Slug" Plumley

Yes, that's what I was going to say.

Pinky was the nickname of a teacher who had been there years but left in the mid-90s, just can't remember his name. Think he taught in the prep block in my day.
