House shirt colours

Anything that doesn't fit anywhere else, but that's still CH related.

House shirt colours

Post by Tim »

Could anyone help to settle an ongoing argument I'm having with another OB, who is about 7 years younger than me (so we only just didn't overlap at CH).

What colours are the different house shirts?

I understand that they might have changed "recently" and that junior houses now have different colours to senior houses. What have they changed to, and why was this done? Do senior houses now have little to do with junior houses? I hear that you can now choose your senior house...

We used to have a gold shirt and a blue shirt for school matches, and a house shirt for house matches. For example in Peele we had maroon-white stripes, and in Hunt (later in Mid B but not Mid A) we had green-white stripes.

I can't remember any of the other colours so if anyone can come up with a complete list from c.1990, that would, in a small way, make my day!

Cheers!
Tim.

You are too recent for me I'm afraid.

Off the top of my head in the sixties, early seventies:

Peele A Maroon
Peele B Green and white hoops
Thorn A Green and Yellow hoops
Thorn B White and Purple hoops.
Mid A Red
Mid B Green and Blue hoops
Col A Light Blue and Dark Blue hoops (Oxford and cambridge)
Col B Green
Lamb A Similar to Thorn B but bigger hoops
Lamb B Black and White hoops (? could be wrong bit of a mental block with both Lambs)
Barnes A Red and Blue hoops
Barnes B Red and white hoops
Maine A Yellow and navy hoops
Maine B Black and white hoops
Prep A and Prep B one wore plain light blue the other plain dark blue. Can't remember which was which.

I'm sure the likes of AKAP or Plum Senior will correct me if they still lurk.

Thanks for the answers!
englishangel - which year / era is that?

I remember the light+dark blue hoops/stripes for Col A.

Actually in my day I seem to remember that the girls' houses, being entire houses in their own right (i.e. 2nd form through grecians all in one B or one A) had different shirts for A and B houses. I assume that is the same across all houses now.

Maybe they should ditch the A and B, come up with some more famous OBs, and have new house names! Imagine being in "Ruck" or even in "Benjamin", that would be cool (ish)

Well, no. Grecians keep the colours of the boarding houses they were in when they help out in house leagues etc.

Interesting - don't they have grecians west vs grecians east matches then? Is there no particular loyalty to your grecians house, only to your two previous houses?

I prefer the idea of "once a peele man, always a peele man" but then those were my days and these are someone else's days!

Gosh, Tim... extrapolate what you say from 'those days' to 'these days' and add in the factor of the Hertford girls up to 1985 and the merger, and take account of the girls who were at Hertford before 1985 and did not move to Horsham (and for whom there were 8 different House colours) - and the mind begins to boggle. At least, mine does......

To start with all houses are "all through" and have been for several years now.

Secondly there is great rivalry between GRE and GRW!! So I suppose you could say there is a definite loyalty!

House singing was the only time the great rivalries between east and west seemed to shine, but for the few years there were grecians houses the pattern always seemed to be Grecians West won the group song (which in my opinion was the best one to win as everyone was involved even the tone deaf individuals like myself) and Grecians East won the harmony bit (so four people won something)!! For the rest of the time it was all about the avenue house where I was in mighty Barnes A and our colours were (officialy) maroon and amber!
Two men lying in a bed, one rolled over to the other and said, 'I'm gonna lead me a life of danger, I'm gonna marry a WESSEX RANGER!'

From the above answers I can see only one mistake/admission. When I was at CH (89-06) the LaA/LaB colours were Black and Amber hoops. In LaA we even had House Colours, in the form of Amber socks with a black hoop in the middle and the top of the sock.

I was the first grecians year to do a full year in the completed grecians houses and from the word go there was a huge rivalry.....West is Best! Although i was a BaB dep we ended up in west to balance the boy 2 girl ratio!

My house colours are still worn to this day-mainly to paint in

I know this is getting away from the point a little, but I seem to recall the first house singing competition (upon resumption - 2001) resulted in a clean sweep for Grecians West! I remember the Fleming's being so happy (they were quite competitive) and buying us all pizzas to celebrate! "Let's do it, let's fall in love..."

Maine A (the only way) had black and white shirts I think... (or it might have been dark blue and white - but that could have been MaB), oh I can't remember...
