Wasn't the term "a truely public school" part of the School's marketing campaign in the late nineties - in that any member of the public could (in theory) send their child there because the school isn't exclusive on the grounds on money unlike other commonly termed "public" schools.

I thought Independent merely meant not a state school.

I think all the terms defining schools got a bit mixed up when they changed from grammar schools and then grant maintained schools and whatever. Blur the edges and people might not notice kind of thing.
