2009 GCSE results
Check this link:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/bsp/hi/e ... 8_6011.stm
The 2009 GCSE & A-Level results for all schools came out today on the BBC website. Naturally I looked up CH and was astounded to find that the percentage for "pupils with equivalent of five or more GCSEs grade C or above including English and Maths" is 11%!
Surely some mistake!? I checked the CH website and regarding the 2009 results, the HM is quoted as saying that CH came 12th nationally for the best GCSE results. The figure for 2006 is 99%, but then for both '07 and '08 is 0%!

Re: 2009 GCSE results
That is because it is only for year 11 all taken at once. If any children take e.g. English and Maths in year 10, that doesn't count. and lots of other things too.

Re: 2009 GCSE results
In the state sector, results taken in Y10 DO count in Y11....not sure entirely how it works but I do know that we all their GCSE results are counted in their Y11 year regardelss of what year they took the exam in.

Re: 2009 GCSE results
It may be due to pupils taking IGSE Maths. This doesn't count in government statistic as it is more difficult than GCSE so they have told state school that if they may not use the IGCSE if they wish Mthas to count in the stats. 5 GCSEs including Maths and English is the bench mark. If you have 12 As but one of them is IGCSE Maths you don't have 5 if you see what I mean because you don't have Maths. It is to discourage state schools from taking IGCSEs because they will be frightened that parents would not understand the stats and think the school was failing. Again this is because the government want to insist that GCSE is preferable to IGCSE and don't want schools to undermine this by using the IGCSE which is harder. Most Indies ignore it. The parents understand it and don't take any notice.Lies, lies and statistics.

Re: 2009 GCSE results
I believe that Dinahcat is correct, and that it is official non-recognition of the IGCSE which skews the statistics, and makes utter nonsense of the league tables (which IMHO are pointless and misleading enough already!).
However, does this indicate that 11% of CH pupils sat the recognised GCSE maths in 2009, and not the IGCSE?
DS sat his maths IGCSE in November, and got his result today - A*. I'm a very proud mum!

Re: 2009 GCSE results
According to the Times, a number of independent schools have stopped doing IGCE maths because of this nonsense about it not counting for the league tables, which is putting off parents from applying for the schools. Brighton college is making a big thing about pulling out od IGCSE because of erratic marking.

Re: 2009 GCSE results
The reason is because CH does IGCSE. This skews our results. Mad but then that is Ed Balls for you IMHO

Re: 2009 GCSE results
Here I go again -----
We took Oxford and Cambridge School Certificate (Followed by Higher)
To PASS it was required to get a pass in Maths, English and a Language PLUS two other subjects, ALL AT THE SAME TIME !!
For Matriculation Exemption it was required to get FIVE CREDITS to include, Maths, English and a Language.
I don't think I DARE comment !
