Might this have been Tyson? (He of the Everest expedition.) Or was it Chris Miller?
A propos David Herbert, he was the son of the then Bishop of Norwich and nephew (I think) of the Earl of Powys. When I arrived at CH, he was the stand-in junior housemaster of Thornton B because Beaky Davies was touring South Africa with the British Lions. He was much more popular than Davies. David Herbert eventually left to go into publishing (I think he had his own publishing house). When he left, the Dramatic Society staged a whole evening's entertainment in his honour. His wife Brenda was very nice. (Still is, I imagine.)
