Anyone care to date this, or identify anyone on it? Quite a good quality photo. Note the watchchain worn by one of the juniors in the front row.

How long would it take the creeper to grow to that lush state?

As stated on E-Bay and shown in the photo. it is one of the Maine houses.

Date wise ?

Hard to say, but looking at the dress etc., of the masters, I'm guessing at just pre-WW1m or during that time.

Myself, I would have said 1920s, with a rather old-fashioned senior housemaster*. The junior housemaster looks too modern to be Edwardian. Also, as Katharine points out, that looks like more than just a few years' growth of creeper.
(Apart from the high partings, the boys could be from the 1950s. Note that none are wearing glasses.)

(Incidentally, there seem to be six watch chains.)

*when I arrived in 1955, Mr Mumford of the manual school still wore a wing collar. That would have foxed anyone who tried to date a photo with him in it.

Don't be fooled by the creeper - that stuff grows incredibly quickly!

I would guess the 1920's.
The house captain looks fairly distinctive: he should have been in one of the pictures of Grecians that use to adorn the corridor outside the headmaster's study. These are probably in the museum.

Teddy Edwards? Good heavens -- I knew him reasonably well, but 45 years later, and wouldn't have recognized him. He looks very modern in the photo, but for all his qualities, 'modern' was one thing he wasn't ca. 1960.

It is always sombre looking at pictures taken of boys and young men in 1914. One has to wonder how many of these did not survive the war.
