It was John Lewis, and it happened in about 1957, and it was very unpopular among parents of all classes. But at least you could keep the old stuff till it wore out or you grew out of it, so hand-knitted school scarves were around for quite a few years after.

The original cravat was a blue 'square'. It consisted of a gratuitous amount of cloth and was consequently very hot. It was replaced after a couple of years by a standard cravat. I still have mine.

I left in December 1954 and have NO recollection of this cravat thing.

It looks like the cravat originated when John Lewis got the supply contract in the early/mid 1950's.

I asked the HOBs on Facebook what happened at Hertford, and it appears that the girls wore uniform to and from home right up until the move to Horsham. I don't think we wore it to interviews, though perhaps we were supposed to  and there are various tales of how we got round the rule. At least one person I know of gave a cabbie an eyeful.
I did wear my winter coat in the Christmas holidays as it was smart, warm and practical, and it was pointless buying a coat for a growing girl to wear for three weeks a year.
