Dining Hall seating

Post by Kit Bartlett » Tue Feb 02, 2016 6:35 pm

Ken Mansell has informed me that there was a piece in "The Blue" for early 1969 stating that the new seating arrangements were introduced in that January. It set out changes that resulted in improvements to the general appearance and meal service. Coleridge B table still kept their old position of being parallel with the dais but all other tables were repositioned with 14 seats each facing the kitchens . Double knock at Grace was abolished.

The seating in dining hall before that was appalling. You were squashed like sardines. In ThB we had a table plan which laid out who was to sit which side of which legs of the table (or maybe astride them), and someone had a trade called 'room' -- his job was to 'create' room at the table which he did by physically hauling boys along by their girdle until there was the required room the right side of the table leg. (A bit like the people employed to squash people into Japanese underground trains.)

The rearrangement created more room by having more tables and moving the Prep to the Court Room.
