What should a New Dep take for his Induction

Jonathan is going up to Housey on Wednesday for his induction week. Originally, he was told to take smart clothes in lieu of uniform but now he is to go straight into uniform on arrival - so that's all right then!

What does he need in the way of PE kit? Presumably he should take his sports stuff from the school he has just left for the time beng tho' i think he will have to get a new track suit. He and his mum are planning a shopping trip in Truro tomorrow but would it not be sensible to purchase from the school shop on arrival? Is it good value for money? What does he actually need in the way of sports and casual gear for this one week. Presumably not the whole works (whatever that may be).

In addition to sports clothes and some casual gear, he plans to take his phone, violin, walkman and alarm clock. Any other suggestions anybody??

N.B. There was no school shop in my day - the school provided everything, even underclothes and pyjamas as well as all the sports gear, rugby boots, plimsolls etc!!!

he'l probably only be in uniform during lessons.
i would say alcohol, but it is possible to get kicked out
during induction, ive seen it happen!
i'd not buy sports kit from school, it's really not that good (or stylish!)

I don't think that many people buy the kit from the school shop - but it's worth a look!

I'd give him some cash to take with him (tuck shop Horsham, illicit substances)

Are there any clubs etc he may want to join or look at?

A couple of books may be good too!

oh yeah....i remember someone getting kicked out on induction week. yeah def take civvies for out of lessons, pens, paper, book or two, money for horsham trips. maybe a supply of food as well...oh yeah its the rock concert on saturday so clothes for that....

back in my time we only went for a day....

..... When I joined the school in 1958,

EVERYTHING had to be bought from John Lewis in London. Must have cost my Mum a fortune !

Thanks for your helpful advice, everybody! Jonathan is now there and seems to think he has remembered to pack most things - although the sense of humour nearly got left out at the last minute!

His mission report this morning said that he was greatly enjoying himself among a crowd of great guys. Paradoxically he said that while there was nothing much to do there, he seemed to be very busy all the time! After only 24 hours, I suspect that he has not yet found out yet just how much there is to do, so he may soon become busier still!

Would be great if he can get on the forum, and give us updates on his progress?
As someone who went to CH when Dep intake just didn't happen, I'd be interested in how someone find it when they enter into the school at that point - must be very different to the experience of joining at 10 like I did!

Is this what we used to know as 'The Thrift Shop'?

Basically it flogged second-hand sports gear. etc., donated when kids had grown out of it.
