I may be able to enlighten you all on the Term "up to London"

once all time zones etc were static and Cornwall was the same time as London... and there was a compnay called Railtrack and British Rail (I'm gettting there!!) the engineers had to distinguish between rails

Thus all track that leads to London is UP
All track leading away from London is DOWN

So it doesn't matter where you are in the country - if you are going to London - (originally by train) you were going UP TO TOWN/LONDON etc..

i hope this clears that little gem up for you...

Sadly it isn't a joke - I worked in the city (yeah I travelled up every morning and down every night) for two train companies and sadly it is the truth

Another random fact - before the railways, Bristol used to be on a time 20 minutes later than London!

I think the time difference was 11 minutes.

By the way, the clock on the Corn Exchange in Bristol has two minute hands, and shows both Bristol and London time.

Fascinating, eh?

now who needs the anorak????

see this has turned into another interesting thread - the time difference before the train companies all decided that the time had to be based - and where did they base it - Greenwhich on the meridian.. And originally the boys at Greyfriars were educated to go to sea, to keep the time and to navigate - which brings us all the way round to CH and our own education, and what it taught us......

Uh oh - no that might have started a war of words....

There was a big fuss between London and Paris as to who should have the Prime Meridian wasn't there?

ah come on they are both a pair of pis$ pots, so there was no need for a toss up - tos$sers they be and always will be....

There was talk about us losing out +/- daylight saving and going onto "European time" - but they also have a +/- hour - so what was the point of the discussion????

more time wasting and tree killing...
