Great pictures. Waves of nostalgia are now sweeping over me and threatening to capsize my emotional dinghy (not at the sight of JT, RR, Mrs C and JR's 'er indoors, but at the band). It's one of the occasions when CH is at its best.

Finally got a few minutes to get these off the camera, sensibly named, and put up on the webserver.
My poor attempts at photographing the Retreat - the misty nostalgic overtone of JRs photos is missing I'm afraid....

I'm sure JR will be able to answer biut 3.00pm seems a very earlt start. I thought we started about 6.00pm.
Also, no sight of the bunglers, who were normally on the steps of the statue.
Did they play the Last Post or was it too early?

No buglers these days, either. The Last Post does get played by a trumpeter as part of the finale, but there's no 'Sunset', which the buglers used to play.
Just too early, I would imagine.

It's all to do with progress, John.
The Retreat wasn't on the last day of term in our day.
I have strong feelings about a trumpeter playing The Last Post. The sound is completely different and doesn't hold with tradition.
Oh well, maybe the next Bandmaster will be ex Royal Marines like Uncle Bill.

The 3pm has come about because they wanted all the school to be out of the grounds by 6pm. What this means is more drinking at the Bax!jhopgood wrote:Excellent photos and brings back memories.

The buglers on the Statue stopped when someone passed out, fell from the ledge and did himself a mischief (1993??). They then continued for a few years stood at the base, before disappearing entirely.
David Elliot was ex Royal Marine bandmaster, yet we still used trumpets rather than bugles. Seeing as David was in place well over a quarter of a century ago it would seem that trumpets/cornets are as much a tradition by now...J.R. wrote:It's all to do with progress, John.

I got to stand on the top plinth on 2 occasions, before being moved into the main band. Completed 7 retreats in total, which was nice.
