We used to do this sort of thing at the end of the summer term on the condemned horsehair mattresses, but NOT in our PJs.

Never, never would we want to have a photo of the

one-style-for-all Berlei broderie anglaise bra, or

thick cotton vest, or

"linings'n'blues" winter issue, or

thick white knickery panty things - summer issue - or

putty coloured thick ribbed stockings (often darned) - or

Misty Morn 60 denier stockings for V1 Form on Sundays (aka Foggy Dawns).

One consolation - suspender belt of choice.

and another belt thing.... urghh!....

(Did we have a separate pair of Blues for Gym and games in summer?)

See, CHAZ? I know you'll understand what I mean...

Steady on! We escaped from having to wear those awful garments a long time ago, CHAZ!

Thank ye Gods and as you posted elsewhere:

Ever since leaving Hertford, I have appreciated the bliss of pretty lingerie, clean every day; owned and chosen by me! I expect you feel the same on a comfort level.

Lets just say that many, many, many years ago, I knew a young lady who had black satin sheets on HER bed.

Great for night time sporting activity, but somewhat useless for sleeping.

I trust this clarifies the situation.

I went into Bluecoat in September 1948 when I went up to LE. That was when the Bluecoat was restored to that form. To get straight to the bottom of this thread, the pants that went with it were designed to be attached by loops to the braces that held up the breeches, and the shirt therefore had to be tucked inside the pants (a la John Major). The front shirt tail thus covered the gaping gap at the front of the pants. What weird designed these I shudder to think. Fresh pants and bands were issued twice a week but a clean shirt I think on Saturdays only. This was all still the case when I left in December 1954.

As the school had our clothing coupons the question of seperate private supply did not initially arise. It was only when clothes rationing ended that extras like coloured rugger jerseys appeared, to be bought privately from the school (Thorn B in purple and green because Haslehust was in a huff (or tight) when he was asked what colour his house should have (allegedly)).

There was a curious custom about the pyjamas which was that it was socially verboten to do up the top button of the jacket.

yes Munch, before the advent of the all-in-one towelling thingies for sport we had quite daring little 'blues' in the summer.

Referring to clean clothes, in the late 1950s/60s I worked with a grubby little s0d wheo wore the same shirt Monday-Friday, with a (note "a") paper collar, which he turned inside out for Thursday/Friday.

Little?????????????????

I remember them as being (extremely rude word deleted) enormous. So enormous, in fact, that they would probably still fit me

Somewhere I have a photograph of Cathy Ennis, resplendent in her pinnie, sitting in the day room and holding up a pair of blues that she was mending.

Have I not posted the photograph of various members of 6s modelling items of school uniform, including a nightie and pjs?

We had 'brief' blues at one stage, completely different from the baggy ones we wore in the winter.
