I think we had a special train from Hertford to Broxbourne and were then coupled onto a regular train because the GBP had to change at Broxbourne.

Didn't we sing that at the end of every term? -
("Goodbyeee, don't cryeee! There's a silver lining in the skyeee! Bonsoir Old Thing, Cheerio, chin chin, Toodle Ooh,{something something}, Goodbyeee") - together with Old Lang Syne???

For some reason that one always makes me think of 'It's only the hairs on a gooseberry that stop it from being a grape'! No idea why!

Of course, "Goodbyee" is from the First World War ---- No No, I do NOT remember it ! (The War, that is )
Many of the songs of that time were "Marching songs" -- note the rythym.
Apropos Engishangel's keyboard --- "My eyes are dim, I cannot see, I have not brought my specs with me -----" as the chorus of the Quartermaster's Stores.

I do know some of the WW1 songs, which my Grandfather sang (Old Soldier, Boxer Rebellion, Relief of Khartoum, both Boer Wars -- WW1 DCM and would have lied about his age for WW2 !) died 1935 ex Royal Horse Artillery , we have a wonderful Photo of him -- all gold braid and moustaches which could be seen from behind. It hangs on the "Family Wall "
He used to bounce me on his knee ---" Be a Soldier, my boy !" ---- for years I tried !!!

My Grandpa was an old soldier too (Royal Sussex Regiment), though not QUITE as old as Neill's, born 1887. He also had a magnificent pair of moustaches and he shaved with a cuthtroat razor which he kept sharp on a leather strop hanging behind the kitchen door.

He was also a crackshot and taught me and my cousins to shoot (an air rifle) at a very tender age, horrifying the mothers.

I in turn taught my son to shoot and when he joined the Army Cadets and the Sergeant asked him how he could shoot so well he told him his mother had taught him!!!

nothing to do with hymns at all....

Here in Finland it is traditional for fathers to teach their sons to shoot. Historically, it's to do with hunting and it is still a very popular sport here... there are also LOTS of gun clubs.

Dearest Husband says he's going to teach the son & heir, which I am resisting but as S&H is only 3 months old and to my knowledge DH hasn't touched a gun since we met 13 years ago, I doubt I need to panic!

When S & H was small I was very anti-gun. My husbands uncle took him to see Santa (in a department store not Lapland) and the dear old fellow gave him a ray-gun. My husband said my face was a picture. However it seems to be innate that boys will play 'guns'. If they are not supplied they make them from Lego or use two fingers, so I reckoned he should learn to use it properly. He now does airsofting and re-enactment.

Just at the moment he is being an archer on the new Ridley Scott/Russell Crowe Robin Hood.

Younger son sticks to computer games and daughter prefers to use her fists and feet.

Perhaps I had better hide Grandad's starting pistol before the grandchildren come over for Christmas!
