In todays Times, (25/4/11) page 12, there is an article about 'Emotional scarring' of boarders at school. We may all have our opinions of such scarring but I'm curious to know if the picture shown to illustrate a boarding school is taken from Housey. The main evidence is of boys appearing to have housey uniform and there is one bed which looks as though it has the plaid blankets that i remember from the 1950s. The contrary evidence appears to be tables with benches and chairs for studying which I never knew of, the day room being the place for such things. There are also pictures on the walls and even a vase of flowers which were not part of my school days. Any thoughts on this picture and if it is from Christ's Hospital wwhat period was it? Perhaps if we had the pictures and the flowers it would have reduced the risk of scarring!

It certainly LOOKs like Housey Uniform, but rememember there are "Other Bluecoat Schools"

What of the "Crests" at the foot of the beds ? -- and was Prep EVER conducted in a dormitory ?

Day Room with long tables and benches ! (Ba B 35 1940-1946)

A fascinating photo.

The beds are certainly similar to the ones from my day.

Never knew tables and flowers in the dorms, and NEVER beds in the day room.

The room itself is not familiar to me as a house room.........


BUT.......... Could this be one of the wards, early 1950's in 'The Sicker' ?

I've just had another close look at the photo.

The clue might be in the bed, top right ?

A nurses night-bed, or a Grecians bed ?

We really need one of our much older posters to have a look !

The lighting looks like a gas candelabra c 1880-1920. Could it be a pic from the London days. Was Horsham ever illuminated by gas-unlikely? I settle for a London infirmary ward. Regards John Saunders

Based on photos from a booklet "Christ's Hospital in Photographs", it is a Ward from London. There is a similar picture on page 25.

Certainly agree with the London thing - none of the architecture appears to match any of the Horsham boarding houses or the Infirmary.
