I must be losing the few marbles I have left! I only remember those awful blue pinafores with stripey blue and white blouse in summer and a yaggy red tartan one in winter with cherry blazers for sunday!

tank
you are younger than I am, Gerrie. You did not have the ghastly yellow dresses for Sundays in summer, phased out around 1960, I guess. Their main attribute was to attract the green fly and black fly from e.g. the tulip tree outside the back of 5's - which, although 'protected', managed to die naturally during the redevelopment of the site and which is no longer there.....

blankets
just to remain topical, tartan ones . Doubly appropriate in fact, as I was in Edinburgh over the weekend.

Re: Mallett's Mallet
sweats
think that is what they were called. Barbaric means of bringing down a temperature, employed in the Infirmary in Hertford in the 50's/60's. Give the patient a Beecham's powder after lunch, strip them off, wrap them tightly in any itchy blanket [so they can't move], lie them down on the bed for... how long? - seemed like forever - and let them 'sweat' out the temperature
