I suppose we await a ruling from the F.A. after F.I.F.A's report.

As a friend of mine is good mates with Graham P, I think a little balance is in order. He admitted within 10 minutes of the end of the game that he had cocked up, because he wrote down the Aussie number 3 rather than the Croat, and then when the Croat fouled again, didn't spot the error immediately. However compared to some of the other disasters during this world cup, he generally did OK.

As a sporting umpire (hockey, rugby), I always find it strange that players can make mistakes all the time with no comebacks, but the ref/umpire makes one error, and they are doomed for ever. Has no one heard of human frailty?

I agree with your general point about human frailty but Graham Poll does not help himself by his flamboyant refereeing style. Hence the reaction to any of his errors is more marked perhaps than for others.

I was always taught that the sign of a good ref is that you don't know he is there. That can never be said of Graham Poll I'm afraid even when he has performed adequately or well.

Don't disagree with you there, his flourishes are often a point of discussion at the pub, especially amongst those who know him well!

As a fellow resident of Tring, I need to stick up for the locals though (he has pride of place of the front page of the local paper depite being sent home).
