One surreal afternoon in Brunei, I served a British cream tea, with scones and fruit cake, to a bunch of mullahs from the censorship board. We then sat and watched two puppeteers put on a show that was to be toured in Brunei primary schools. These mullahs sat absolutely stony faced through it all, I was inhibited from shouting back as the children may have done.Scone Lover wrote:I have heard tales that Katharine does a mean scone!
The following day the puppeteers performed in front of the Sultan's children and this was the lead story on Brunei TV, the second story was that Nelson Mandela had been released from prison!
It was another world!!

Well that story of Katharine's is proof positive that it takes all sorts to make a world.
My father-in-law was in South Africa when Mr Mandela was released, he was actually on the spot by sheer accident. He said it was the most moving mass experience he has ever seen. The sheer joy of the moment has never left him to this day

I was in the US and they showed it live on the news (amazing when you consider it) and I sat a bewildered 4 year old down to watch history being made.
Unfortunately he cannot remember it but is very interested in history and has read all about it.

I was working as a security consultant in the city of London in the late 80's when the IRA set off another of their bombs. Whilst I was helping the police clear the area, I started a conversation with an Inspector which went: -
Inspector: You do realise we are history tonight
Me: Your bl**dy cheerful aren't you
Inspector: No, I mean we are a part of history
BOOM
Me: You can keep it mate!
