Or Christian. Or even remotely religious at all.

Quite. Why is it that some Christians think Christians have the monopoly on kindness and humanity?

All very true.

Huntertitus (a bloke, by the way) may also have taken into consideration the hordes of television evangelists who clog up the satellite channels. Some may think that these people are genuine in their belief that they are doing God's work, healing, performing miracles etc. Others may see them as money-driven egomaniacs preying on their followers. I couldn't possibly comment.

I'm sure Huntertitus may comment in due course (having checked carefully for typos).

Let me explain my remark about "In my Hearing "

Any male, who insults my wife, in my hearing, will get Thumped !

Irrespective of age or physical Prowess !

And II am quite willing to be charged with Assault.

Those of us, who belong to a different Era, have certain Standards ----and the reaction to an Insult to your Wife, demanded the reaction I have described.

I have said, that hunteritis my express his opinions, on this Forum, whether insulting, or otherwise.

BUT NOT IN MY HEARING !

Admirable sentiment Neill and one shared by most male members of the forum I fancy.

However you are being somewhat harsh to Huntertitus in my view since he had no way of knowing TBA's connections when he expressed his opinion of evangelists.

As I said before there are good eggs and bad eggs in every basket and part of the problem, possibly, is exactly how one defines "evangelist."

I have met a lot of very good people from Moral Rearmament whom some people might define as evangelist conversely I encountered a bunch of charlatans known as the Children of God whom attempted to use very unchristian methods to keep people in their clutches. Again some may use the term evangelist to describe them although "cult" would be my description.

In this instance I think you should turn the other cheek

And just how is 'huntertitis' (sic) supposed to manage this? Will you provide a list of threads from which you promise to avert your gaze?

Neill, from what you've told us about your wife, she doesn't sound like a shrinking violet. I'm guessing that she could defend herself adequately and very articulately, with no physical violence involved :D :D

Maybe Neill means literally within his hearing (rather than reading) - or more likely - within the length of his arm!

Most probably true. Or within range of a pistol-shot at dawn! My question was a little tongue-in-cheek, I'm afraid......

The threat of violence by a christian in defence of a person held dear when the alleged offence is a posting on civilised forum seems incongruous at best.

Evangelists!

Post by Angela Woodford »

Do any Old Girls remember that New Zealand carol added to our repertoire by Miss Taverner?

Te Harinui!

Not on a snowy night
By star or candle light
Nor by an angel band
There came to our dear land

(Chorus) Te Har-ee-noo-ee...

But on a summer day
Within a qwy-et bay
The Maori People heard
The great and glor-rious Word

(Te Har-ee-noo-ee, etc)

The people gathered round
Upon the grassy ground
And heard the Preacher say -
"I bring to you this day -

Te Har-ee-noo-ee" etc

And so it goes on.

I never liked it! All too vividly, I could imagine those happy Maoris, doing whatever Maoris do within a quiet bay. It's Christmas Day for the future Pakeha, 1814, and who sails in but The Rev Samuel Marsden to "convert" them.

Oh yes, I remember it very well. I loved it, so much so that I sang it at home and my Dad loved it too and introduced it in our church. I don't know if it's still sung there but it certainly was until he retired in 1981.

However, I'd never thought of the implications until you just spelled them out, Angela. Sad. Very sad.

Evangelists and Missionaries

Sorry, Jo. I suppose I was so indoctrinated as a child with the idea that other cultures were there to be turned away from their evil ways and must come to love the Lord - I winced as soon as Miss T handed out the copies.

Various other hymns come to mind, too. I can't remember the first line, but

Something something isle
Where every prospect pleases
But only man is vile -

Which goes on to comment

"The heathen in his blindness
Bows down to wood and stone"

Funny really - those fanatical Christians would quite happily come out with comments such as

"Oh, but Mother Nature Knows Best".
