I apologise to all HOGoFs, to whom I have emitted an initial shriek. But I am wondering if any other Old Blues are reading the First Lesson in Church on Sunday 22 July? It is a passage from the Song of Solomon. It is chapter 3, verses 1 - 4.

I discovered the vicar and the curate chatting together after the Morning Service on Sunday. How, I asked them, was I going to get throught this reading without laughing at the lectern? And why this passage; why? Why?

The vicar and curate looked at each other and began chortling in a repressed clerical way. Then they began laughing even more, clutched at each other, tried to say something and failed to be intelligible. So I am even more mystified.

Why this passage? And how shall I say "For the gift of his Holy Word" when I have given it my full dramatic interpretation?

Probably because every other verse in the Song of Solomon is even more, er, explicit. Apart, perhaps, from "awake, awake, O Northern wind, blow on my garden fair". Think yourself lucky you don't have to read ch5v2-5.

Now that should be interesting; my grand-daughter is being baptised at the morning service that day - I wonder if her church follows the lectionary rigidly?! As with most baptisms there will no doubt be various people there who are not regular churchgoing Anglicans - our lot include lapsed and still practising Catholics, lapsed Lutherans and who knows what else - I wonder what they make of it? I was thinking of asking if I might be allowed to do a reading (as a lapsed Lay Reader), but I am not so sure now!! Thank you for the warning!
